The McIntosh MC462 is a two-channel solid-state power amplifier rated at 450 watts per channel. Its Quad Balanced circuit architecture and McIntosh Autoformers provide the full rated output into 2-, 4-, or 8-ohm loudspeakers, giving a system designer a consistent foundation across a wide range of loudspeaker loads.
Compared with the preceding MC452, McIntosh increased filter capacity by nearly 50 percent, raising dynamic headroom from 1.8dB to 3.0dB. That additional reserve is intended to help the amplifier respond to large musical swings while maintaining control. Balanced and unbalanced inputs make connection straightforward, while two front-panel Watt Meters provide immediate visual feedback.
Power Guard monitors the signal to prevent clipping from reaching the loudspeakers. Sentry Monitor provides fuseless short-circuit protection, thermal sensors supervise operating temperature, and Power Control coordinates turn-on and meter illumination with compatible McIntosh components.
The MC462 measures 17 1/2 inches wide, 9 7/16 inches high, and 22 1/2 inches deep, including its front panel, handles, and cable allowance. It weighs 115 pounds. That gives us a great deal of freedom when matching it to a system. It is a substantial amplifier—115 pounds is not a casual lift—but that physical scale is matched by real reserve, useful protection, and the kind of blue-meter presence people hope for when they picture a McIntosh power amplifier.
