Power supplies

Two kinds of box, both doing the same job: feeding a component cleaner, steadier power than it can make for itself. One is an external supply built for a particular component, such as the Naim NPX 300 for a New Classic streamer or Linn's Radikal for the LP12. The other is a linear power supply, which replaces the plug-top adapters on switches, streamers and phono stages with proper regulated DC. The two notes below explain the difference; the rails list everything we carry, by maker.

The difference

External supply or linear supply?

What is an external power supply?

Most components carry their own power supply inside the box: a transformer and regulators that turn wall current into the clean DC the circuit needs. An external power supply moves that job into a separate chassis, often a bigger and better one than the original box could hold, and connects by a dedicated cable. Naim's NPX 300 and NAPS 555 DR, MOON's 820S, Rega's Neo PSU and Linn's Radikal all work this way: they replace or bypass the supply built into a specific component, and they only fit the components they were designed for.

The gain is twofold. The transformer and its magnetic field move away from the sensitive circuitry, and the supply itself is usually far more generous, so the component sees a steadier voltage under load. On a turntable, a dedicated supply also drives the motor with a purer waveform, which is why speed stability and background silence improve.

What is a linear power supply, and how is it different?

A linear power supply is a type, not a fit. Small components such as network switches, streamers, DACs, routers and phono stages often ship with a plug-top switch-mode adapter: light, cheap and electrically noisy, because it chops the mains at a high frequency and that hash rides into the signal. A linear supply does the same job the old-fashioned way, with a transformer, rectifier and quiet regulation, and no high-frequency switching.

Nordost's QSOURCE and Clearaudio's Professional Power and Smart Power are linear supplies. Rather than being matched to one product, they offer standard DC voltages on several outputs, so one box can replace the adapters for a switch, a streamer and a phono stage at once. If the component has a barrel-jack DC input, a linear supply almost certainly fits it.

In short: an external supply upgrades one component it was built for; a linear supply replaces the wall adapters of anything that uses them. Ask us which you need, and we will check voltage, polarity and current before anything is plugged in.

By maker

Every power supply we carry

Alphabetical by maker, least to most expensive within each.

Linear supplies for Clearaudio turntables

Clearaudio 3 in the range

Professional Power and Smart Power replace the standard supply on Clearaudio decks from the Concept to the Innovation, with a quieter, better-regulated feed to the motor.

For the Sondek LP12

Linn 1 in the range

The Radikal is the LP12's top motor and power supply: a DC motor, a tacho that reads the platter speed directly, and a supply in a Klimax case.

For MOON North Collection

MOON 1 in the range

The 820S feeds any MOON source or preamplifier a fully regulated supply from a separate chassis.

The Naim upgrade path

Naim 3 in the range

Naim has built its range around outboard supplies for fifty years. The NPX 300 serves the New Classic streamers and preamplifier, the NPX TT the NVC TT phono stage, and the NAPS 555 DR the 500 Series.

Linear supplies for anything with a DC input

Nordost 2 in the range

QSOURCE replaces the wall adapters on switches, streamers, DACs and phono stages with up to six outputs of clean regulated DC.

For Rega turntables

Rega 1 in the range

The Neo PSU gives a Planar 1, 2, 3 or 6 electronic speed change and a cleaner drive to the motor.
