MA9500 Integrated Amplifier

on-demo
in-stock

The MA9500 is a 300-watt-per-channel solid-state integrated amplifier built to organize a large analog and digital source collection. Autoformers deliver the full rated output into 2-, 4-, or 8-ohm loudspeakers.

Ten analog inputs include two balanced, six unbalanced, and separate adjustable moving-coil and moving-magnet phono inputs. The replaceable DA2 module adds seven digital inputs, including HDMI ARC for television audio and MCT for a compatible McIntosh transport.

  • Three hundred watts at every tap — Autoformers make the full rated power available to 2-, 4-, and 8-ohm loudspeakers.
  • Analog and digital in equal measure — Separate moving-coil and moving-magnet phono inputs join six line inputs, two balanced inputs, and seven DA2 connections.
  • Eight useful tone bands — The front-panel analog equalizer can make a careful recording or room adjustment and can be bypassed completely.

An eight-band analog equalizer, Home Theater PassThru, HXD headphone listening, and balanced and unbalanced outputs make the MA9500 a powerful one-chassis alternative to a conventional preamplifier and power-amplifier stack.

A perspective from Pearl Audio

John’s Take

The MA9500 is easy to understand once you stop calling it merely an integrated amplifier. It is a 300-watt McIntosh power amplifier, a very complete analog preamplifier, two phono stages, and a DA2 digital front end sharing one chassis. It is the solid-state answer to the same question the MA12000 approaches with a tube preamplifier: how much of a serious system can you put in one box without making the owner feel boxed in?

I particularly like the eight-band equalizer here. You can leave it out of the circuit, of course, but a small correction on an imperfect recording is sometimes worth considerably more than another round of theoretical purity. The MA9500 gives you that control and then gets out of the way.

The McIntosh difference

The engineering behind the experience

McIntosh gives its technologies names because each solves a specific problem. Here is what each one does, why it matters in a system, and what you may notice when listening.

Autoformer output matching: amplifier output and loudspeaker impedance taps

On the MA9500

McIntosh Autoformer™

What it does

McIntosh couples the output stage to the loudspeaker through its Autoformer, making the amplifier's rated output available at its supported 2-, 4-, and 8-ohm connections.

Why it matters

The amplifier is less dependent on a loudspeaker's nominal impedance for its rated output, giving Pearl more flexibility when matching a McIntosh amplifier to the right speaker.

Power Guard compares the amplifier’s input and output waveforms, reducing input drive when necessary to help prevent clipping.

On the MA9500

Power Guard®

What it does

Power Guard compares the amplifier’s input and output waveforms, reducing input drive when necessary to help prevent clipping.

Why it matters

Clipping can sound harsh and can damage loudspeakers. Controlling the drive helps the amplifier stay within its available clean output.

What you may notice

Demanding musical peaks are less likely to become harsh from amplifier clipping. Power Guard is a safeguard, not a source of extra power.

Sentry Monitor responds to potentially damaging current by disengaging the output stage. This fuseless protection helps safeguard the amplifier if speaker wiring is accidentally shorted, or if a demanding musical passage combined with a difficult speaker load causes excessive output current.

On the MA9500

Sentry Monitor™

What it does

Sentry Monitor responds to potentially damaging current by disengaging the output stage. This fuseless protection helps safeguard the amplifier if speaker wiring is accidentally shorted, or if a demanding musical passage combined with a difficult speaker load causes excessive output current.

Why it matters

A sudden orchestral crescendo or powerful bass passage can demand much more current, especially at high listening levels with a difficult speaker load. If that demand reaches unsafe levels, Sentry Monitor intervenes to help protect the amplifier.

What you may notice

During normal operation, it works in the background. If protection activates, playback may stop; correct the cause and follow the reset instructions for your model. Sentry Monitor is a fuseless protection technology, so there is no output-protection fuse to replace when it activates.

Monogrammed Heatsinks™

What it does

McIntosh's monogrammed heatsinks are connected to the output transistors and use highly thermally conductive material to help dissipate heat efficiently.

Why it matters

Effective heat management supports stable operation and long-term reliability while the McIntosh monogram makes a functional part visually distinctive.

Solid Cinch™ Speaker Binding Posts

What it does

Solid Cinch speaker binding posts secure the loudspeaker cable at the amplifier’s output. Their gold-plated contact surfaces resist corrosion, while the clamping design helps keep the connection from working loose.

Why it matters

Solid Cinch lets you keep the speaker cable straight and exactly where you want it while tightening the connection. Only the top turns: the separate clamping barrel presses straight down on the spade, without a rotating contact surface dragging the lug or twisting the cable. This holds the spade securely at your chosen angle and helps keep neighboring connections clear of one another.

What you may notice

You notice the difference when attaching a large spade lug: it is easy to keep the spade and speaker cable perfectly straight while applying substantial downward clamping pressure. As you tighten the top, the barrel presses firmly onto the spade without twisting it out of position. The cable stays neatly aligned, with a secure metal-to-metal connection.

Power Control

What it does

Power Control lets compatible McIntosh components coordinate system startup and shutdown. On systems that support it, the connection can also carry meter-illumination commands.

Why it matters

One control component can bring a compatible McIntosh system into operation together.

FAQ
How is the MA9500 different from the MA12000?

Both provide Autoformer-coupled power, seventeen inputs, DA2, two phono inputs, and eight-band equalization. The MA9500 is fully solid state and rated at 300 watts per channel; the MA12000 uses a four-tube preamplifier and is rated at 350 watts per channel.

Does it have both MC and MM phono inputs?

Yes. It has separate moving-coil and moving-magnet inputs, and both provide adjustable loading.

Can the television connect directly?

Yes. The DA2 HDMI ARC input accepts audio from a compatible television and can coordinate basic power and volume through HDMI control.

Does it support SACD from an MCT transport?

Yes. The dedicated MCT input accepts conventional CD audio and the DSD64 stereo layer from a compatible McIntosh transport.

Can the equalizer be bypassed?

Yes. The eight-band analog equalizer can be engaged for adjustment or bypassed for a flat signal path.

Can it be part of a theater system?

Yes. Home Theater PassThru assigns a selected analog input to a fixed volume level so a compatible theater processor controls the front channels.

Does the MA9500 include network streaming?

No. Its DA2 accepts digital sources but does not act as a network streamer. A separate streamer can connect to a digital or analog input and then be selected like any other source.

Can the television remote operate the MA9500?

With a compatible television connected through HDMI ARC and HDMI control enabled, the television remote can coordinate normal power and volume functions.

Can I use the MA9500 as a preamplifier with a larger power amplifier?

Yes. The variable balanced and unbalanced outputs allow an external power amplifier to be added while the MA9500 continues to provide source selection, volume control, phono, DAC, and equalization.

What does the HXD headphone setting change?

HXD introduces controlled acoustic crossfeed for headphones to make hard-panned recordings behave more like they do when heard from a pair of loudspeakers.

How should I plan placement and ventilation?

Allow open space around the component, keep ventilation openings clear, and leave additional room behind it for terminated speaker cables, source connections, control cables, and the power cord. Pearl Audio will confirm support and clearance during system planning.

How do I arrange an audition?

Use the Audition control on this page, call Pearl Audio, or email us. We will confirm a private listening appointment and prepare a system appropriate for the MA9500.
