MA352 Integrated Amplifier

on-demo
in-stock

The MA352 combines a four-tube preamplifier with a direct-coupled solid-state power amplifier rated at 200 watts per channel into 8 ohms or 320 watts per channel into 4 ohms. Two 12AX7A and two 12AT7 tubes are visible above the polished stainless-steel chassis.

Its six analog inputs comprise two balanced, three unbalanced line inputs, and one moving-magnet phono input with adjustable loading. There is no internal DAC, keeping the MA352 centered on analog sources and allowing the owner to select a separate digital source if desired.

  • Four visible preamplifier tubes — Two 12AX7A and two 12AT7 tubes operate in the preamplifier section.
  • Power that rises into 4 ohms — The direct-coupled output stage delivers 200 watts per channel into 8 ohms and 320 watts per channel into 4 ohms.
  • An analog system center — Two balanced inputs, three unbalanced line inputs, and one adjustable moving-magnet phono input keep the design focused.

Five-band analog equalization, Home Theater PassThru, two subwoofer outputs, a variable preamplifier output, and HXD headphone listening give the hybrid design useful reach beyond a simple turntable-and-speakers system.

A perspective from Pearl Audio

John’s Take

The MA352 is what happens when the delightful MA252 idea grows up and starts moving bigger loudspeakers. You still see the four small-signal tubes, and the preamplifier still has that tactile analog quality, but the output stage is now delivering 200 watts into 8 ohms and 320 into 4. That is a major change in the range of loudspeakers and rooms I would consider pairing with it.

I also like that McIntosh did not force a digital section into this amplifier. You choose the DAC or streamer that suits the system, while the MA352 concentrates on analog control, adjustable moving-magnet phono, and power. The five-band equalizer and two subwoofer outputs make it more adaptable than its open-chassis appearance first suggests.

The McIntosh difference

The engineering behind the experience

McIntosh gives its technologies names because each solves a specific problem. Here is what each one does, why it matters in a system, and what you may notice when listening.

In selected McIntosh integrated amplifiers, Hybrid Drive pairs vacuum-tube preamplification with a solid-state power amplifier in one chassis.

McIntosh Hybrid Drive

What it does

In selected McIntosh integrated amplifiers, Hybrid Drive pairs vacuum-tube preamplification with a solid-state power amplifier in one chassis.

Why it matters

It combines the character and dimensionality people value in a tube preamplifier with the control and output capability of solid-state power.

What you may notice

Depending on the model and system, listeners may notice tube dimensionality together with firm, confident loudspeaker control.

Power Guard compares the amplifier’s input and output waveforms, reducing input drive when necessary to help prevent clipping.

On the MA352

Power Guard®

What it does

Power Guard compares the amplifier’s input and output waveforms, reducing input drive when necessary to help prevent clipping.

Why it matters

Clipping can sound harsh and can damage loudspeakers. Controlling the drive helps the amplifier stay within its available clean output.

What you may notice

Demanding musical peaks are less likely to become harsh from amplifier clipping. Power Guard is a safeguard, not a source of extra power.

Sentry Monitor responds to potentially damaging current by disengaging the output stage. This fuseless protection helps safeguard the amplifier if speaker wiring is accidentally shorted, or if a demanding musical passage combined with a difficult speaker load causes excessive output current.

On the MA352

Sentry Monitor™

What it does

Sentry Monitor responds to potentially damaging current by disengaging the output stage. This fuseless protection helps safeguard the amplifier if speaker wiring is accidentally shorted, or if a demanding musical passage combined with a difficult speaker load causes excessive output current.

Why it matters

A sudden orchestral crescendo or powerful bass passage can demand much more current, especially at high listening levels with a difficult speaker load. If that demand reaches unsafe levels, Sentry Monitor intervenes to help protect the amplifier.

What you may notice

During normal operation, it works in the background. If protection activates, playback may stop; correct the cause and follow the reset instructions for your model. Sentry Monitor is a fuseless protection technology, so there is no output-protection fuse to replace when it activates.

Monogrammed Heatsinks™

What it does

McIntosh's monogrammed heatsinks are connected to the output transistors and use highly thermally conductive material to help dissipate heat efficiently.

Why it matters

Effective heat management supports stable operation and long-term reliability while the McIntosh monogram makes a functional part visually distinctive.

McIntosh Blue Meters

What it does

McIntosh’s blue meters make the music’s changing level visible. On power amplifiers, they indicate output power; on preamplifiers, they indicate output signal level. Each needle responds as the music rises and falls, even when the volume setting stays the same.

Why it matters

A quiet passage and a sudden crescendo can produce very different output levels. The meters let you see those changes at a glance. On stereo models, separate left- and right-channel readings also show how the recording’s balance changes.

What you may notice

Watch the needles rise with a drum strike or orchestral swell, then settle as the music relaxes. Their movement gives musical dynamics a visible rhythm. The blue glow is a familiar part of the McIntosh experience, while the meters show what the component is doing as you listen.

Headphone Crossfeed Director (HXD®)

What it does

With loudspeakers, each ear hears both channels. Headphones separate them. McIntosh’s Headphone Crossfeed Director (HXD®) adds controlled crossfeed between the channels to bring some of the spatial character of speaker listening to your headphones.

Why it matters

HXD can make the stereo image feel more connected, with instruments less isolated at the left and right earpieces. It gives you another way to enjoy a familiar recording during private listening.

What you may notice

Compare HXD on and off with a familiar stereo recording. Listen for a more cohesive sense of placement, especially with instruments mixed far to one side. The effect varies with the recording and headphones; choose the presentation you prefer.

FAQ
Is the MA352 an all-tube amplifier?

No. Its preamplifier uses two 12AX7A and two 12AT7 tubes; its power amplifier is solid state.

How much power does it deliver?

It is rated at 200 watts per channel into 8 ohms and 320 watts per channel into 4 ohms.

Does it have a built-in DAC?

No. The MA352 is an analog integrated amplifier. Connect a separate streamer or DAC to one of its line-level inputs.

Which cartridges work with the internal phono stage?

The built-in phono input is for moving-magnet cartridges and provides adjustable loading. Moving-coil cartridges require a suitable external phono solution unless their output and loading requirements are compatible through additional equipment.

Can I connect two subwoofers?

Yes. The MA352 provides two unbalanced subwoofer outputs.

Can it join a home-theater system?

Yes. Home Theater PassThru lets a selected analog input operate at fixed gain under a compatible processor’s volume control.

What tubes does the MA352 use?

Its preamplifier uses two 12AX7A and two 12AT7 vacuum tubes. The 200-watt-into-8-ohms and 320-watt-into-4-ohms power-amplifier section is solid state.

Does the MA352 include streaming?

No. It is an all-analog integrated amplifier. A network streamer or DAC/streamer connects to one of its balanced or unbalanced line inputs.

What do the tube illumination colors indicate?

The tubes illuminate amber during warm-up and green for normal operation. A flashing amber indication can accompany Power Guard intervention; the owner’s manual should be consulted if an abnormal indication persists.

Can its five-band equalizer be taken out of the signal path?

Yes. The tone controls can be used for a source-specific adjustment or bypassed for a flat response.

How should I plan placement and ventilation?

Allow open space around the component, keep ventilation openings clear, and leave additional room behind it for terminated speaker cables, source connections, control cables, and the power cord. Pearl Audio will confirm support and clearance during system planning.

How do I arrange an audition?

Use the Audition control on this page, call Pearl Audio, or email us. We will confirm a private listening appointment and prepare a system appropriate for the MA352.
