MA8950 Integrated Amplifier

on-demo
in-stock

The MA8950 delivers 200 watts per channel through McIntosh Autoformers, with the full rating available at 2, 4, or 8 ohms. It retains the familiar illuminated meters and substantial solid-state authority while occupying a lower chassis than the MA9500 and MA12000.

Eight analog inputs include one balanced, six unbalanced, one adjustable moving-coil phono input, and one fixed-load moving-magnet phono input. Seven DA2 digital inputs add USB, MCT, HDMI ARC, coaxial, and optical connections.

  • Two hundred Autoformer watts — The full 200-watt-per-channel rating is available through dedicated 2-, 4-, and 8-ohm connections.
  • DA2 is part of the amplifier — HDMI ARC, MCT, USB, coaxial, and optical sources are selected from the same front panel and remote as the analog inputs.
  • Two different phono inputs — The moving-coil input provides adjustable loading; the moving-magnet input uses fixed loading.

The 200-watt Autoformer sweet spot

Full McIntosh system control in a more manageable chassis

Five-band analog equalization, Home Theater PassThru, two variable outputs, and an HXD headphone output give the MA8950 enough flexibility to remain the center of a system as sources and loudspeakers change.

A perspective from Pearl Audio

John’s Take

The MA8950 may be the easiest integrated in the McIntosh line to recommend: Two hundred watts per channel is a serious amount of power, the Autoformers make loudspeaker matching straightforward, and the DA2 gives the digital side of the system the same directness as the analog inputs.

It does not have the MA9500’s eight-band equalizer or the MA12000’s tube preamplifier, but that is part of its appeal. Five bands are enough to make useful corrections, two phono inputs cover the cartridges most people actually own, and the chassis still looks and feels unmistakably McIntosh. This is the range’s balance point for many systems.

The McIntosh difference

The engineering behind the experience

McIntosh gives its technologies names because each solves a specific problem. Here is what each one does, why it matters in a system, and what you may notice when listening.

Autoformer output matching: amplifier output and loudspeaker impedance taps

On the MA8950

McIntosh Autoformer™

What it does

McIntosh couples the output stage to the loudspeaker through its Autoformer, making the amplifier's rated output available at its supported 2-, 4-, and 8-ohm connections.

Why it matters

The amplifier is less dependent on a loudspeaker's nominal impedance for its rated output, giving Pearl more flexibility when matching a McIntosh amplifier to the right speaker.

On the MA8950

Power Guard®

What it does

Power Guard compares the amplifier’s input and output waveforms, reducing input drive when necessary to help prevent clipping.

Why it matters

Clipping can sound harsh and can damage loudspeakers. Controlling the drive helps the amplifier stay within its available clean output.

What you may notice

Demanding musical peaks are less likely to become harsh from amplifier clipping. Power Guard is a safeguard, not a source of extra power.

Sentry Monitor responds to potentially damaging current by disengaging the output stage. This fuseless protection helps safeguard the amplifier if speaker wiring is accidentally shorted, or if a demanding musical passage combined with a difficult speaker load causes excessive output current.

On the MA8950

Sentry Monitor™

What it does

Sentry Monitor responds to potentially damaging current by disengaging the output stage. This fuseless protection helps safeguard the amplifier if speaker wiring is accidentally shorted, or if a demanding musical passage combined with a difficult speaker load causes excessive output current.

Why it matters

A sudden orchestral crescendo or powerful bass passage can demand much more current, especially at high listening levels with a difficult speaker load. If that demand reaches unsafe levels, Sentry Monitor intervenes to help protect the amplifier.

What you may notice

During normal operation, it works in the background. If protection activates, playback may stop; correct the cause and follow the reset instructions for your model. Sentry Monitor is a fuseless protection technology, so there is no output-protection fuse to replace when it activates.

Monogrammed Heatsinks™

What it does

McIntosh's monogrammed heatsinks are connected to the output transistors and use highly thermally conductive material to help dissipate heat efficiently.

Why it matters

Effective heat management supports stable operation and long-term reliability while the McIntosh monogram makes a functional part visually distinctive.

DA2 digital audio module inputs and conversion signal path

On the MA8950

DA2 Digital Audio Module

What it does

The replaceable DA2 module groups McIntosh digital inputs and digital-to-analog conversion in an upgradeable module rather than permanently fixing that circuitry to the main chassis.

Why it matters

It gives a compatible component a broad digital connection hub and a path for a future module upgrade without replacing the entire component.

Power Control

What it does

Power Control lets compatible McIntosh components coordinate system startup and shutdown. On systems that support it, the connection can also carry meter-illumination commands.

Why it matters

One control component can bring a compatible McIntosh system into operation together.

FAQ
How much power does the MA8950 deliver?

It is rated at 200 watts per channel into 2, 4, or 8 ohms through its Autoformer speaker connections.

Are both phono inputs adjustable?

The moving-coil input provides adjustable cartridge loading. The moving-magnet input uses fixed loading.

Can I connect a television?

Yes. The DA2 includes HDMI ARC for audio from a compatible television, with HDMI control available for everyday power and volume operation.

Can I use an MCT500 for SACD playback?

Yes. A compatible McIntosh transport connects to the MCT input, which carries conventional CD audio and the DSD64 stereo layer from SACD.

Does it have Home Theater PassThru?

Yes. A selected analog input can operate at a fixed gain under the control of a compatible theater processor.

Can I bypass the tone controls?

Yes. The five-band equalizer can be used for adjustment or bypassed.

Does the MA8950 have a built-in music streamer?

No. The DA2 provides digital inputs and conversion, but network playback requires a separate streamer connected to an appropriate digital or analog input.

Can my television remote control the MA8950?

With a compatible HDMI ARC television and HDMI control enabled, the television remote can coordinate ordinary power and volume operation.

Can I add a separate power amplifier later?

Yes. Two unbalanced variable outputs let the MA8950 continue as the system’s preamplifier and source center while an external amplifier is added.

What is the benefit of the 2-, 4-, and 8-ohm outputs?

The Autoformers provide a dedicated connection for each of those nominal loudspeaker impedances while preserving the full 200-watt-per-channel rating. Pearl Audio will select the appropriate tap for the loudspeaker.

How should I plan placement and ventilation?

Allow open space around the component, keep ventilation openings clear, and leave additional room behind it for terminated speaker cables, source connections, control cables, and the power cord. Pearl Audio will confirm support and clearance during system planning.

How do I arrange an audition?

Use the Audition control on this page, call Pearl Audio, or email us. We will confirm a private listening appointment and prepare a system appropriate for the MA8950.
