Linn · LP12 upgrades
Linn's two-speed power supply for the Sondek LP12's AC motor: digital speed management derived from the Radikal, checked on every rotation, with the control board inside the deck and a slim external supply. Supplied with a new 12 V motor.
Supplied with a 12 V AC motor; fitted as standard to the Selekt LP12. Linn now calls it simply Lingo; this is the fourth generation, introduced in 2018.

The story
A small speed error is a pitch error, so the supply matters more than its size suggests. Lingo, the current version of a name Linn has used since 1990, uses digital processing to manage the speed of the LP12's AC motor: a tachometer reads the platter, the controller corrects the drive on every rotation, and the motor is recalibrated each time the deck is switched on. Earlier Lingos generated a clean two-phase sine wave and then left the motor to itself; this one closes the loop, which is why Linn describes the technology as derived from the Radikal. The control circuitry mounts inside the plinth and is fed by a slimline external supply that can be hidden, and a 12 V synchronous motor is supplied in place of the 110 V unit. It switches between 33⅓ and 45 rpm from the deck.
Alan Sircom reviewed the Lingo 4 against a Lingo 3 for Hi-Fi+ in 2018 and found that "everything just gets that bit tauter and more focussed" while the character of the deck was unchanged, concluding that "the Lingo 4 is the best LP12 power supply that still features an AC motor." It is the supply in the Selekt LP12, whose reviewers heard a deck that was "crisp, fast and precise" (Hi-Fi+) and "a highly emotional performer" (StereoNET), and it was the supply of the Akurate LP12 before it.
As an upgrade it replaces the Majik supply or any earlier Lingo, Valhalla or Basik, and the new motor comes with it. The next step, the Radikal, moves to a DC motor and is required for Linn's internal Urika phono stages; a Lingo owner who later moves to Radikal keeps everything else. Fitting involves changing the motor and setting up the suspension, which we do in our Portland workshop.

Every Sondek LP12 built since 1972 shares the same plinth geometry, so each part below bolts into any deck. Linn's own guidance is to prioritize upgrades source-first, and its components page gives the suggested order roughly as bearing, deck, power supply, sub-chassis, tonearm, cartridge, phono stage and base board. Prices are our current store prices for each part on its own; fitting is done in our workshop.
| 1 · Bearing |
Karousel $1,300 The one upgrade that applies to every LP12 regardless of specification: a stainless-steel housing and lock-nut make the union of platter, spindle, bearing and sub-chassis stiffer and stronger, so rotation is smoother and less vibration reaches the record. |
| 2 · Deck and plinth |
LP12 plinth $1,155 ·
Bedrok $12,060 A new hardwood plinth renews the frame every other part mounts to; Bedrok, in densified beech more than twice the density of hardwood, is the only plinth Linn offers as a performance upgrade. |
| 3 · Power supply and motor |
Majik PSU $740 ·
Lingo $2,505 (this product) ·
Radikal (Standard) $6,270 ·
Klimax Radikal $16,820 Speed accuracy and motor noise. Lingo adds Radikal-derived speed management and switched 45 rpm to the AC motor; Radikal replaces it with a brushed DC motor checked on every rotation and provides the power for a Urika phono stage. |
| 4 · Sub-chassis and armboard |
Majik sub-chassis $591 ·
Kore $1,480 ·
Keel SE $6,215 Stiffness between bearing and arm. Kore bonds a machined armboard to a three-layer aluminum box; Keel SE machines sub-chassis and armboard from solid with underside bracing, which Linn quotes as 300 percent stiffer. |
| 5 · Tonearm |
Krane $2,050 ·
Arko $4,965 ·
Ekos SE $6,725 Bearing friction, resonance control and tracking: the static-balanced Krane of the Majik LP12, the all-7075-aluminum gimballed Arko of the Selekt, and the hand-built titanium Ekos SE of the Klimax. |
| 6 · Cartridge |
Adikt $923 ·
Koil $1,250 ·
Krystal $2,415 ·
Ekstatik $8,335 Resolution, tracking and the match to arm and phono stage; the Kendo moving coil fitted to the Selekt LP12 is available to order. |
| 7 · Phono stage |
Uphorik $3,740 ·
Urika $4,290 ·
Urika II $4,630 Uphorik works with any turntable and preamplifier; Urika and Urika II mount inside the deck inches from the arm and require a Radikal. |
| 8 · Base board |
Solid Base $247 ·
Trampolin $346 Trampolin's suspended, damped feet isolate the deck from the shelf; the Solid Base suits a rack that already isolates. |
Linn's power supplies for the LP12, in order of price; the two Radikal generations are listed because we still service and complete 2021-era decks.
Lingo is included in the Selekt LP12; the Radikal is the step above and is required for Urika.
Hi-Fi+ reviewed the Lingo 4 itself; the Selekt LP12 reviews cover it as fitted.
Pearl Audio has been a Linn dealer since 2006, and the Sondek LP12 is the turntable we sell more of than any other; we keep upgrading those customers' decks over the years. LP12 setup and upgrades are done in-house by John Loranger and Russ Sherrill, our two LP12 technicians, each of whom has been building LP12s for more than a decade. We stock most parts for most LP12 upgrades for immediate installation, carry all of Linn's current standard plinth finishes, and keep six LP12s in different configurations on display in our Portland showroom.
We fit the Lingo and its new motor in a single visit and reset the suspension afterward; it is the usual first electrical step for a Majik LP12 owner. Read more in our Linn Sondek LP12 story.
