Hybrid Drive at full scale
The MA12000 combines a four-tube preamplifier with a 350-watt-per-channel solid-state power amplifier. McIntosh Autoformers deliver the full rated output into 2-, 4-, or 8-ohm loudspeakers, giving the system a consistent power foundation across a broad range of loads.
Ten analog inputs include two balanced, six unbalanced, and separate adjustable moving-coil and moving-magnet phono connections. The included DA2 module adds seven digital inputs, including USB, MCT, and HDMI ARC, with support through DSD512 on USB.
An eight-band analog equalizer, Home Theater PassThru, headphone listening with HXD, and fixed and variable outputs make the MA12000 less a minimalist integrated amplifier than a complete high-performance system center.
A perspective from Pearl Audio
The MA12000 is the biggest and most powerful integrated amplifier we’ve ever had in our store. It is for someone who wants the power, scale, and control of high-powered separates, but in one chassis. Conceptually, it is most like combining a C2800 tube preamplifier with an MC352 power amplifier: tube gain stages up front and 350 watts of solid-state power behind them.
Like the contemporary pairing of a C2800 and MC462, the MA12000 uses tubes where they can shape the preamplifier signal, then lets a very large solid-state output stage take care of the loudspeakers. It brings much of the authority and flexibility of big separates into a single component without making the system feel pared back. If that is what you want, this is the integrated amplifier I would start with.
Like the standalone C2800 tube preamplifier, the MA12000 provides tube gain stages, separate moving-magnet and moving-coil phono inputs, the DA2 Digital Audio Module, HDMI ARC, and an MCT input for a compatible McIntosh transport. It also includes an eight-band analog equalizer that is genuinely useful—and can be bypassed completely when you do not need it.
On the power-amplifier side, the MA12000 shares the MC352’s 350-watt rating, McIntosh Autoformers, and balanced connectivity. It has the composure and control needed for substantial loudspeakers; the Bowers & Wilkins 802 and Sonus faber Amati immediately come to mind.
Three things to know

Four 12AX7A tubes bring the warmth, dimensionality, and easy musical flow people love about tube sound; the solid-state power amplifier follows with 350 watts per channel and effortless control.

Ten analog inputs and seven DA2 digital inputs accommodate two phono cartridges, television audio, computer playback, and a compatible McIntosh MCT transport.

Eight-band equalization, Home Theater PassThru, multiple outputs, Power Control, and data ports support systems that extend well beyond two source components.
The McIntosh difference
McIntosh gives its technologies names because each solves a specific problem. Here is what each one does, why it matters in a system, and what you may notice when listening.

No. The MA12000 is a McIntosh Hybrid Drive integrated amplifier. Four 12AX7A vacuum tubes form the preamplifier section, where source selection and volume control take place, while a solid-state power-amplifier section supplies 350 watts per channel to the loudspeakers.
That division of labor is the point of the design: the tubes operate at the front of the signal path, while the transistor output stage provides the current and control required by demanding loudspeakers. It is not an all-tube amplifier and it does not use large output tubes like an MC275.
The MA12000 is rated at 350 watts per channel with both channels operating, whether the loudspeaker is connected to the 2-, 4-, or 8-ohm output. McIntosh Autoformers provide separate output connections for those three nominal impedances so the amplifier can deliver its full rated power across a broad range of loudspeaker loads.
The correct connection is chosen from the loudspeaker manufacturer’s impedance guidance and, when useful, the speaker’s behavior across the frequency range—not simply from an assumption that one tap is always best. Pearl Audio normally terminates the amplifier end with spade lugs and will select the appropriate taps during installation.
Yes. The MA12000 has separate moving-coil and moving-magnet phono inputs, so two appropriately equipped turntables—or two tonearms—can remain connected. The moving-coil input provides selectable resistance values of 50, 100, 200, 400, or 1,000 ohms. The moving-magnet input is fixed at 47,000 ohms and allows capacitance adjustment from 50 to 400 pF in 50 pF steps.
Those adjustments are made from the Phono Trim controls. The cartridge manufacturer’s recommendation is the right starting point; final loading can then be confirmed by listening. A separate phono preamplifier is optional rather than required, and can be connected to any suitable line-level input if you later prefer one.
The installed DA2 Digital Audio Module makes the MA12000 a full digital control center as well as an analog integrated amplifier. Its seven inputs are two coaxial, two optical, USB, MCT, and HDMI ARC. Coaxial and optical accept PCM through 24-bit/192 kHz; USB supports PCM through 32-bit/384 kHz, DXD through 384 kHz, and DSD through DSD512.
HDMI ARC brings compatible television audio into the music system. The proprietary MCT connection accepts CD and SACD audio from a compatible McIntosh MCT transport, including the high-resolution stereo program from SACDs. The DA2 is a DAC and input module, not a network streamer, so streaming services still require a separate network source.
Yes. Home Theater PassThru allows the MA12000 and its connected front loudspeakers to become the left and right channels of a multichannel system. You assign a compatible analog line-level input to PassThru and connect the processor’s trigger output to the MA12000 PassThru control input. Phono and digital inputs cannot be assigned to this role.
When the processor activates the system, it controls the front-channel volume and the MA12000 operates at the required fixed setting. Most front-panel controls are intentionally disabled while PassThru is active, preventing an accidental level change. Pearl Audio can confirm the input assignment, channel levels, trigger behavior, and turn-on sequence during setup.
Yes. The MA12000 provides two controllable preamplifier-output sets, including balanced connections on Output 2, plus a fixed output. Output 2 can feed an external power amplifier and can be switched from the front panel or remote; its associated 12-volt trigger can also turn compatible equipment on and off with the system.
A variable preamplifier output can also feed a powered subwoofer or an external crossover. Because level, crossover frequency, phase, and main-speaker integration depend on the exact products and room, they should be planned as a system rather than treated as a generic connection. The fixed output is not appropriate when the connected component needs to follow the MA12000 volume control.
No. The MA12000 does not contain a network music streamer. Its DA2 module converts and selects digital audio, but a separate streamer supplies the network connection, music-service interface, and playback control. A streamer can be connected digitally by USB, coaxial, or optical so the DA2 performs conversion, or by an analog input when you prefer the streamer’s own DAC.
Spotify Connect, TIDAL Connect, Qobuz Connect, AirPlay, Roon, and similar features therefore depend on the capabilities of the external streamer you choose. This separation can be useful: the amplifier remains the long-lived center of the system while the network source can be selected or upgraded as streaming platforms change.
Usually, yes, when the television supports HDMI ARC and HDMI-CEC and both functions are enabled in its setup menu. The MA12000 provides separate CEC settings for volume and power, allowing a compatible television remote to handle the everyday functions most people want while television audio returns to the amplifier over the same HDMI connection.
ARC also provides automatic lip synchronization. If a particular television or video chain still produces a timing mismatch, the MA12000 offers a manual audio delay from 0 to 150 milliseconds in 10-millisecond steps. HDMI accepts PCM, Dolby Digital, and DTS; final behavior can vary by television, so its audio-output format and CEC settings should be confirmed during installation.
Yes. The variable preamplifier outputs can feed an external power amplifier, allowing the MA12000 to remain the source selector, volume control, phono preamplifier, DAC, and system-control center. Output 2 includes balanced and unbalanced connections, and its trigger can coordinate power with compatible McIntosh equipment.
That creates several sensible upgrade paths: add an amplifier for a second loudspeaker system, use an external amplifier for the main speakers, or build a more elaborate bi-amplified arrangement. The internal preamplifier and power-amplifier sections are also linked at the rear panel, so any reconfiguration should preserve the intended signal routing. Pearl Audio can plan the change before cables or loudspeakers are moved.
McIntosh Headphone Crossfeed Director, or HXD, addresses the exaggerated left-versus-right separation that can occur when recordings mixed for loudspeakers are heard through headphones. It introduces controlled acoustic crossfeed so spatial cues feel less locked inside each ear and the presentation can resemble the connected soundstage heard from a pair of loudspeakers.
HXD is available only when headphones are connected, is on by default, and can be switched off from the Trim controls. It does not alter loudspeaker playback. The owner’s manual specifies the headphone output for impedances from 100 to 600 ohms; final suitability also depends on headphone sensitivity and the listening level you require.
Plan for both weight and airflow. The MA12000 weighs 108 pounds before cables, so it needs a rigid, level surface with adequate load capacity and enough working room to place it safely. Do not install it directly above another heat-producing component, and keep every ventilation opening clear.
For a custom cabinet, McIntosh specifies at least 6 inches above the amplifier, 2 inches below it, and 2 inches on each side, with 20 inches of depth behind the front panel. A quiet ventilation fan can help when several components share an enclosure. Also leave practical rear access for terminated speaker cables, source connections, control cables, and the power cord; Pearl Audio can confirm the final support and clearances before installation.
