The story

The 703 S3 puts its Carbon Dome tweeter in a Solid Body Tweeter-on-Top housing milled from aluminum, a first for this model. Beneath it, a 6-inch Continuum Cone FST midrange with Biomimetic Suspension is decoupled from the cabinet, and two 6.5-inch Aerofoil Profile bass cones, varying in thickness for stiffness, fill out the bottom end through a Flowport.

Reviewers single out its imaging: Part-Time Audiophile's Graig Neville called it one of the best speakers for imaging he had heard in his room, with precise placement and a soundstage that extends past the speakers. He found the treble detailed and at times forward on bright recordings, and the bass a little lean for a large room, so the 703 is happiest in a medium-sized room or with a subwoofer.

B&W recommends 30 to 200 W into 8 Ω; with 90 dB sensitivity and a 3.1 Ω minimum, a good solid-state amplifier is the right match. Arrange an audition in our Portland showroom to compare it with the 702 S3 and 704 S3.

Key technologies

  • Decoupled Carbon Dome tweeter. A carbon-reinforced dome built for the 700 Series, with a break-up point B&W puts at 47 kHz, decoupled from the cabinet.
  • Solid Body Tweeter-on-Top. The tweeter sits in a housing milled from a single block of aluminum, with a longer tube-loading system behind the dome, a design taken from the 800 Series Diamond.
  • Decoupled FST midrange. The three-way models give the midrange its own Continuum Cone FST driver with Biomimetic Suspension, decoupled from the cabinet so the bass drivers cannot disturb it.
  • Aerofoil Profile bass cones. Cones of varying thickness, developed with computer modelling, stiff where the load is greatest.
  • Flowport. B&W's dimpled bass port, designed to reduce turbulence and port noise.

Finishes

  • Gloss Black with black grille
  • Mocha with black grille
  • Satin White with black or grey grille

All three finishes are the same price. Grilles are included: black as standard, with grey available for Satin White.
