The 702 S3 takes the 703's top end, a Carbon Dome tweeter in a Solid Body Tweeter-on-Top housing over a decoupled 6-inch Continuum Cone FST midrange with Biomimetic Suspension, and adds a third 6.5-inch Aerofoil Profile bass driver in a deeper cabinet. The result reaches down to 28 Hz, the deepest in the range.

Reviewers describe a speaker that is neither warm nor bright, with clean, controlled bass, precise imaging and a soundstage wider than the speakers themselves. StereoNET found it worked best with a powerful solid-state amplifier, toed in and kept clear of rear and side walls. B&W recommends 30 to 300 W, and it is easy to drive at 90 dB, though its 3.1 Ω minimum rewards a capable amp. It suits medium-to-large rooms.

Key technologies

  • Decoupled Carbon Dome tweeter. A carbon-reinforced dome made for the 700 Series. B&W puts its breakup point at 47 kHz, well above the audible range.
  • Solid Body Tweeter-on-Top. The tweeter sits in a decoupled housing milled from solid aluminum, with a longer tube-loading system behind the dome. The design comes from the 800 Series Diamond.
  • Decoupled FST midrange. The 3-way models use a dedicated Continuum cone FST midrange with Biomimetic Suspension, decoupled from the cabinet so the bass drivers don't disturb it.
  • Aerofoil Profile bass cones. Cones of varying thickness, stiff where it matters most, for deep, dynamic bass.
  • Flowport. B&W's dimpled bass port, designed to reduce turbulence and port noise.

Finishes

  • Gloss Black with black grille
  • Mocha with black grille
  • Satin White with black or grey grille

The grille is black as standard; Satin White can also be ordered with a grey grille.
