The story

The X250.8 is the step up from the X150.8 in power and in parts: 56 power MOSFETs per channel on a 9-inch-tall heatsink chassis, rated at 250 W into 8 Ω with a damping factor of 150 and a supply that draws 500 W at idle. Like every Class AB .8 amplifier it carries a substantial Class A bias, so the first watts are delivered in Class A and the output stage moves into AB only on peaks. The front end is the balanced .8 circuit with constant-current sourcing and precise voltage references, and the inputs are XLR and RCA at 100 kΩ and 50 kΩ.

Enjoy the Music's Tom Lyle, reviewing the X250.8 with the XP-17 phono stage, heard a major improvement over the previous-generation Pass amplifier it replaced despite its lower rating, and the magazine gave the X250.8 a Legendary Performance award in 2020. Pass describes the amplifier's character as substantial power with a natural tonal balance and dimensionality that holds up through dense mixes and large dynamic swings.

The X250.8 suits most loudspeakers in most rooms, which is why it anchors so many Pass systems. The XP-22 is its natural partner, with the XP-12 as the single-chassis alternative. The X350.8 adds 100 W and 16 more devices per channel for harder loads.

Key technologies

  • Class AB with Class A bias. The first watts are delivered in Class A; the output stage moves into AB on peaks.
  • 56 output MOSFETs per channel. Rated at 250 W into 8 Ω on a 9-inch heatsink chassis.
  • Balanced .8 front end. Constant-current sourcing, precise voltage references and current feedback.
  • Front-panel meter. Reads output-stage bias; rests near 10 o'clock on X amplifiers.
  • Balanced and single-ended inputs. XLR and RCA; 100 kΩ balanced, 50 kΩ single-ended.

Finishes

  • Silver anodized aluminum, standard
  • Black anodized aluminum, factory option

Silver is the standard finish shown. Black is available to order at additional cost; ask us for a quote.
