The story

The XA160.8 has more of everything than the XA100.8: 72 power MOSFETs per chassis, a higher-capacity power supply that draws 600 W at idle, and an 11-inch-tall heatsink array. Pass rates it at 160 W per channel in Class A into 8 Ω and says the supply allows more than 320 W of Class A peaks, with a damping factor of 200. The front end is the .8 series balanced circuit with constant-current sourcing and precise voltage references, and the inputs are XLR and RCA at 100 kΩ and 50 kΩ.

Future Audiophile's Jerry Del Colliano called the XA160.8 as good an amplifier as he had heard at any price, and set out the costs plainly: heat, electricity and weight. At 123 lb each the XA160.8s are a two-person lift and need a ventilated floor position. This is the amplifier Pass positions for large rooms and loudspeakers that want Class A current without the full scale of the XA200.8.

The XP-22 or XP-32 are the matching preamplifiers. The X600.8 uses the same chassis and device count in Class AB for 600 W per channel at the same price, and the XA200.8 is the top of the Class A line.

Key technologies

  • 72 output MOSFETs. Per amplifier, biased into Class A to the rated 160 W.
  • Class A peaks above 320 W. A higher-capacity supply lets the amplifier deliver more than 320 W peaks per channel in Class A (Pass Labs).
  • Damping factor 200. For control of demanding loudspeakers.
  • Balanced .8 front end. Constant-current sourcing, precise voltage references and current feedback.
  • Monoblock construction. Dedicated supply, circuit and chassis per channel.

Finishes

  • Silver anodized aluminum, standard
  • Black anodized aluminum, factory option

Silver is the standard finish shown. Black is available to order at additional cost; ask us for a quote.
