The PS2K stacks four 13-inch carbon fiber woofers in a tall sealed enclosure, each driven by its own dedicated 500 W Class D amplifier, with a front-facing output meter. The woofers use multi-layer cones, a long-excursion design and McIntosh's LD/HP magnetic circuit to keep distortion low, and the extra-thick baffle keeps the cabinet rigid. Power Guard prevents harsh clipping and Sentry Monitor provides fuseless short-circuit protection.
Two parametric EQ bands (30 to 100 Hz, ±8 dB) help tame room modes and placement effects, and adjustable low- and high-pass filters (40 to 100 Hz), level and continuously variable phase make it straightforward to blend with full-range speakers. Balanced stereo and mono inputs and outputs let it run from a stereo preamplifier or a theater processor, and multiple units can be daisy-chained. McIntosh rates maximum output at more than 120 dB. It is for large rooms and serious theaters; at 458 lb, plan delivery and placement in advance.
