The story

The Planar 8 is what Rega learned from its no-limits Naiad turntable, applied to a deck people can buy. The skeletal plinth is a Tancast 8 polyurethane foam core between two skins of high-pressure laminate, 30 percent lighter than the RP8 it replaced, with a phenolic resin double brace between the tonearm mount and the main bearing. The 24 V synchronous motor is mounted from below, a method taken straight from the Naiad.

The platter is a three-piece laminated glass design developed with a British glass engineering firm from two Pilkington glasses, giving a flywheel effect without mass where it is not wanted. It rides on a single-piece aluminum sub-platter and a hardened tool-steel spindle in a brass housing. The RB880 arm has a preloaded bearing assembly adjusted to better than a thousandth of a millimetre, a thinner stainless balance weight and a low-capacitance cable with locking plugs. The Neo Mk2 power supply, a DSP generator with a high-stability crystal, is matched to each motor by hand.

What Hi-Fi? said the Planar 8 set sky-high standards at its price, and Hi-Fi Choice made it an Editor's Choice. We offer it bare or with Rega's Nd7, Nd9, Ania Pro or Apheta 3 fitted; the Apheta 3 combination is the one Rega built it around. Its small footprint and removable one-piece dust cover suit a wall bracket, and Rega makes a dedicated one for the Planar 8, 10 and Naia.
