A Planar 6 with key parts from the Planar 8: the RB880 tonearm, twin drive belts and a metal-skinned foam-core plinth, in the classic Rega shape with a dust cover.
The RS ("Rega Special") Edition starts from the Planar 6 and borrows heavily from the Planar 8. Its Tancast 8 foam-core plinth is skinned with high-pressure laminate and a brushed-aluminum layer, keeping it light and rigid. Double-thickness phenolic bracing ties the tonearm mount to the main bearing. A hand-tuned 24 V synchronous motor drives a 16 mm dual-layer Optiwhite glass platter and aluminum sub-platter through a CNC twin pulley and two Reference EBLT belts. The included Neo Mk2 supply handles speed change, fine adjustment in 0.01 rpm steps and motor anti-vibration. The RB880 arm has an aluminum vertical bearing housing, stainless sleeve and shaft, a stainless counterweight and Rega's low-capacitance cable.
What Hi-Fi? gave the Planar 6 RS full marks for sound and found it a clear step up from the standard Planar 6, with more composure, detail and dynamic range. It comes with one of two cartridges fitted and aligned at the factory. The Nd9 is a moving magnet with a nude fine-line diamond on a boron cantilever, and it works with any good MM phono stage. The Ania is a moving coil that needs an MC-capable phono stage. Rega offers a package that adds its Fono MC phono stage to the Ania version; ask us for details.
