The story
The Planar 6 RS Edition borrows the key parts of the next deck up. Its RB880 tonearm, normally found on the Planar 8, has an aluminum vertical bearing housing with a stainless sleeve and shaft, a custom stainless balance weight and Rega's low-capacitance phono cable. A CNC-machined twin drive pulley runs two Reference EBLT belts for more consistent drive, and the hand-tuned 24 V motor is matched to the Neo Mk2 power supply that ships in the box.
The plinth keeps the Planar 6's Tancast 8 foam core and double bracing but is skinned in RS brushed-metal aluminum laminate with matching edging, and the dust cover is smoked. The 16 mm dual-layer Optiwhite glass platter sits on an aluminum sub-platter. Rega fits a cartridge at the factory: the Nd9 moving magnet with its boron cantilever and fine-line diamond, or the Ania moving coil.
The Ear's Jason Kennedy called it a remarkably sophisticated turntable and a standout bargain with the RB880 and Nd9, and What Hi-Fi? found it combined the best of the Planar 6 and Planar 8 to huge success. For a buyer weighing a Planar 6 with upgrades against a Planar 8, it is the deck to hear first.
