Linn LP12 Keel Sub-Chassis

On a standard LP12 the sub-chassis, armboard and arm collar are three parts held together with fixings. Keel machines all three from one piece of aircraft-grade aluminum alloy, with no screws or joins, so there is nowhere for energy to collect and the tonearm is coupled directly to the bearing. Linn machined it without the heavy clamping of conventional methods to avoid distorting the part, pocketed the underside with varied wall thickness and depth to break up vibration, and arranged the mass so that the Keel has the same weight and center of gravity as the three parts it replaces, which means the LP12 suspension works exactly as designed. Art Dudley, writing in Stereophile, described it as "a single-piece subchassis, tonearm board, and Linn-specific tonearm mounting collar" and noted that, because its mass matches the original parts, setting up the suspension is no harder than before.

In October 2025 Linn replaced the Keel with the Keel SE, which adds an optimized bracing structure underneath and a rebalanced center of mass and is quoted as 300 percent stiffer.
