The story
The NAP 500 has been Naim's reference amplifier since 2000, and the DR version brings the discrete-regulator power supply and the NA009 output transistor developed for Statement. The amplifier and its NAP 500 PS are separate boxes: the supply's 1,100 VA transformer provides twelve raw DC feeds, and each channel then has ten stages of local regulation. The output stages are bridged, which Naim credits for speed and isolation between input and output, and the 25 kg brushed, black-anodised chassis carries a variable-speed fan for the rare occasions passive cooling is not enough.
The NAP 500 DR is for the final Naim system, with the NAC 552 preamplifier and ND 555 streamer, driving full-range loudspeakers such as Bowers & Wilkins 801 D4 or Magico. It will hold a 2-ohm load for extended periods without a change in character.
Naim Classic 500 Series components are made in black anodised aluminium.
