Naim · Classic 500 Series

The ND 555 is Naim's reference network player: a Burr-Brown R2R ladder DAC on a suspended brass sub-chassis, 40-bit SHARC processing and DR regulation, powered by the separate NAPS 555 DR.

Price is for the ND 555 only; it requires a NAPS 555 DR power supply.

The story

The ND 555 is where Naim's digital and analogue engineering meet at the top of the range. Its streaming board, the same generation as the New Classic, decodes PCM to 32-bit/384 kHz and DSD128 and oversamples to 40 bits in a SHARC processor before a Burr-Brown R2R ladder DAC. The DAC and analogue stages sit on a brass sub-chassis suspended to isolate them from microphony, LVDS signalling keeps timing noise down, and Naim's DR regulators condition every supply. Streaming covers Roon Ready, Qobuz, TIDAL, Spotify Connect, AirPlay 2, Chromecast and internet radio, with two optical, coaxial RCA and BNC digital inputs. Analogue output is on RCA and 5-pin DIN. The ND 555 has no internal power supply: a NAPS 555 DR is required, and a second one is the ultimate upgrade.

Naim designed the ND 555 to partner the NAC 552 and NAP 500 DR, and that is where it belongs: the reference digital source for a Classic 500 system. For a one-box streamer with a built-in supply and an upgrade path, the NSS 333 is the alternative.

Key technologies

  • Burr-Brown R2R DAC. A resistor-ladder converter fed by a 40-bit SHARC oversampling stage.
  • Suspended brass sub-chassis. DAC and analogue electronics float to reduce microphony.
  • DR regulation and LVDS. Discrete regulators on the audio supplies; low-voltage differential signalling to reduce timing errors.
  • Naim streaming platform. Roon Ready, Qobuz, TIDAL, Spotify Connect, AirPlay 2, Chromecast, Bluetooth, UPnP and internet radio.

Finishes

  • Naim Black black anodised aluminium with illuminated logo

Naim Classic 500 Series components are made in black anodised aluminium.
