The story
The SP-10RE continues the tradition of the original SP-10 of 1970, the first direct-drive turntable, which was sold as a motor unit for broadcasters and enthusiasts to build into their own plinths. The RE is the current version: a coreless direct-drive motor with two rotors, twelve poles and eighteen coils, the coils offset by 60 degrees on each side to stiffen the board and cancel fine vibration, developing 0.39 N·m of torque. The platter is brass and die-cast aluminum weighted with tungsten, 7.9 kg, on engineering-plastic thrust bearings, and the motor holds it to wow and flutter of 0.015%, which Technics describes as the limit of measurement.
The 365 mm square motor unit is supplied with its separate control unit, which houses the switching power supply and noise-reduction circuitry away from the cartridge and sets speed to two decimal places on an OLED display with ±16% adjustment at 33⅓, 45 and 78 rpm. The link between the two units is designed to resist external noise. Everything else, the plinth, the arm, the arm board and the cartridge, is the owner's to choose, which is the point: the SP-10RE is the deck for someone who wants a twelve-inch arm, a slate or hardwood plinth, or two arms.
The SL-1000RE is the same motor and control unit in Technics' own plinth with its ten-inch arm, and is the simpler route to the same performance. Pearl Audio can advise on plinths, arms and cartridges to suit.
