The story
The SL-1000RE is the SP-10RE motor unit in Technics' own plinth with Technics' own tonearm, and it is the direct descendant of the SP-10 broadcast turntables of the 1970s. The motor is a coreless direct drive with two rotors and twelve poles driven by eighteen coils, the coils on each side offset by 60 degrees to stiffen the board and cancel fine vibration. It develops 0.39 N·m of torque and spins a 7.9 kg platter of brass and die-cast aluminum weighted with tungsten, running on engineering-plastic thrust bearings. Technics specifies wow and flutter at 0.015%, which it describes as the limit of measurement.
The control unit is a separate box, 110 mm wide, which keeps the switching power supply and its noise-reduction circuitry away from the pickup, with a noise-resistant link between the two. It sets speed to two decimal places on an OLED display, with ±16% adjustment, and handles 33⅓, 45 and 78 rpm. The tonearm is a ten-inch static-balance universal arm, 254 mm effective length with 21° offset, with 0 to 15 mm of height adjustment and three auxiliary weights that take cartridge-and-headshell combinations from 15.9 to 31 g. Output is a DIN socket that accepts straight phono cables.
The plinth is built against vibration, the feet are high-damping silicone insulators, and the main unit weighs 40.2 kg. The RE is the 2024 revision of the SL-1000R, which Michael Fremer reviewed for Stereophile in November 2018; listening through a stethoscope to the top deck with the platter spinning, he "heard no noise at all". Technics has since updated the motor for rigidity and reliability and renamed the deck.
For an owner who already has a plinth and arm in mind, the SP-10RE is the same motor and control unit without them. For a complete deck at a lower price, the SL-1200G offers the twin-rotor motor and a 3.6 kg platter in the Grand Class cabinet. Pearl Audio can supply the SL-1000RE with a cartridge and phono stage to match.
