The story
The Planar 6 introduced the construction Rega now uses on every deck above it. Its plinth is a core of Tancast 8, a polyurethane foam developed for aerospace, skinned in Polaris high-pressure laminate with gloss-black polymer edging. The result is very light and very stiff, which is the whole point of Rega's low-mass philosophy: less stored energy, less to resonate. Integral aluminum pillars carry the tonearm and the hub in a double-brace arrangement.
The platter is a dual-layer float-glass design on a single-piece machined aluminum sub-platter, driven by Rega's Reference EBLT belt from a custom pulley. The 24 V synchronous motor is hand tuned to its own Neo Mk2 power supply, which is supplied as standard and gives electronic speed change, fine speed adjustment and anti-vibration control. The RB330 arm is fitted with a stainless balance weight.
What Hi-Fi? has given the Planar 6 its best-turntable award in the £1,000 to £2,000 class most years since 2017, and in its latest update with the Nd7 cartridge called it refined, articulate and precise. We offer it without a cartridge or with Rega's Nd5, Nd7 or Ania Pro fitted; the Ania Pro turns it into a moving-coil front end that needs the Fono MC or Aos MC phono stage.
