The story
The Planar 2 is where Rega's glass platter begins. A 10 mm Optiwhite float-glass platter spins on an 11 mm self-securing brass main bearing, driven by a 24 V low-noise motor with a new control PCB and Rega's Advanced EBLT belt. The plinth is an acrylic high-gloss laminate, with redesigned feet to cut the vibration reaching the arm.
The RB220 tonearm is hand assembled in Rega's Southend factory, with low-friction polymer bearings and an automatic bias system. Since May 2024 Rega has offered the Planar 2 with its Nd3 moving-magnet cartridge factory fitted in place of the Carbon, and that is the version sold in the US. The cartridge's three-point fixing sets its overhang automatically on a Rega arm.
What Hi-Fi? gave the Planar 2/Nd3 five stars in 2024 and praised its rhythmic precision and build. The step up from the Planar 1 is a stiffer, heavier platter, a better arm and a better cartridge; the Planar 3 adds the RB330 arm, a 12 mm platter and Rega's double-brace plinth. Speed is changed by moving the belt.
