The story

The Fono MC Mk4 is the moving-coil stage Rega built for its Ania, Ania Pro, Apheta 3 and Aphelion 2 cartridges, and it is adjustable enough for most other low-output MCs. The input uses a Linear Systems LSK389 low-noise FET chosen for linearity and a high input impedance that barely loads the cartridge. Polypropylene capacitors sit in the signal path and the RIAA circuits, and a MUSES op-amp handles the equalisation stage.

Rear-panel DIP switches select 63.5 or 69.5 dB of gain, four resistive loads from 70 to 400 Ω and two capacitive loads of 1000 or 4300 pF. Out of the box it is set to 100 Ω, 1000 pF and high gain, which is Rega's recommendation for all of its own MCs. Frequency response runs from 13 Hz to 100 kHz and RIAA accuracy is better than ±0.2 dB.

Hi-Fi Choice made it a group-test winner and called it an outstanding affordable MC stage. The case matches the Fono MM Mk5 and the Neo Mk2, and it runs from a 24 V wall supply. It is the natural stage for a Planar 6 or Planar 8 with the Ania Pro or Apheta 3; the Aos MC is the step up.

Key technologies
