The story
The Aos MC puts the Aura's amplifier into a half-width case at about a third of the price. It is a two-stage, all-analog design with no digital control. The first stage is a symmetrical complementary Class A amplifier built on parallel Linear Systems ultra-low-noise FETs in a compound pair, so no bias current flows through the cartridge coil; it drives the passive high-frequency part of the RIAA curve. The second stage is a symmetrical Class A differential amplifier with a common-base driver and handles the active low-frequency equalisation.
A self-adjusting servo compensates for changes in temperature. Gain is 69.3 dB, switchable to 63.5 dB at the rear, with resistive loads of 70, 100, 150 or 400 Ω and 1000 or 4300 pF of capacitance. Frequency response is 17.5 Hz to 100 kHz, RIAA accuracy is within ±0.2 dB from 65 Hz to 70 kHz, and distortion is 0.03 percent. It drops into 0.4 W standby after a period without signal, which can be disabled by DIP switch.
The Ear's Jason Kennedy made it an Editor's Choice and found it remarkably clear, quiet and well timed, noting only the lack of balanced outputs and the narrower loading range than the Aura. The Aos MC is the phono stage we recommend for a Planar 8 or Planar 10 with the Apheta 3 when the Aura is out of reach.
