The story
The Fono MM Mk5 does one job. Its input is a fully discrete, cascaded complementary amplifier, the RIAA equalisation is split into two stages to keep them from interacting, and polyester capacitors carry the signal while polypropylene parts set the curve. Gain is 41.4 dB with 47 kΩ and 100 pF loading, output impedance is 200 Ω, and RIAA accuracy is better than ±0.2 dB.
What Hi-Fi? calls it its favourite affordable phono stage and has given it an award every year since 2018, including Product of the Year in 2023 and 2024. It is the stage we fit with the Planar 2, 3 and 6 and any Rega Nd cartridge; for a moving coil, step to the Fono MC Mk4.
