The story

The Aura is a full-width, 13 kg phono stage built on three symmetrical amplifier stages. The first is a complementary Class A amplifier with parallel-connected Linear Systems ultra-low-noise FETs in a symmetrical compound-pair input, which means no bias current flows through the cartridge coil; it drives the passive high-frequency RIAA section. The second is a symmetrical Class A differential amplifier with a common-base driver that provides the active low-frequency equalisation. The third inverts the signal to create a balanced output alongside the unbalanced one.

Each stage has its own localised supply fed by a discrete, symmetrical tracking power supply with fast diodes and a low-noise reference, running 60 percent higher in voltage than is typical for headroom. Gain, mute and mono are switched by relays. Loading covers 50, 100, 150, 300 and 400 Ω and five capacitance values from 1000 to 5700 pF; gain is 69.5 or 63.5 dB. RIAA is held to 0.2 dB from 100 Hz to 50 kHz and distortion is 0.03 percent.

Hi-Fi Choice made it an Editor's Choice, The Ear's Jason Kennedy called it a top-notch phono preamplifier, and What Hi-Fi? gave it five stars. It is the stage Rega designed for the Aphelion 2 on the Naia and Planar 10, and it partners the Osiris or Mercury and Solis in a reference system.

Key technologies

  • Three symmetrical stages. Class A input, Class A differential second stage, inverting third stage for balanced output.
  • Linear Systems FET input. Parallel ultra-low-noise FETs in a compound pair; no bias current through the coil.
  • Tracking power supply. Discrete symmetrical supply, 60% higher voltage than typical, localised to each stage.
  • Full loading control. Five resistive and five capacitive settings, relay-switched gain, mute and mono.
  • Polypropylene RIAA. 1% tolerance polypropylene capacitors in the equalisation.
