The story
The Apheta 3 takes the stylus approach from Rega's reference Aphelion 2: a fine-line nude diamond mounted through 90 degrees, which Rega developed to extract more detail from the groove. Its hand-wound coil and iron micro cross are about half the size of the original Apheta's, so the moving parts weigh less and track more cleanly. Like every Rega MC, it is undamped. There is no tie wire or foam damper, just a rhomboid pivot and a custom high-power neodymium magnet. The body is CNC-machined from one piece of aluminum, anodized, and fitted with a smoked protective cover. Rega's three-point fixing sets overhang automatically on a Rega arm.
Hi-Fi World reviewed the Apheta 3 fitted to a Planar 10 and rated the pairing outstanding. It praised powerful, firm bass, a full and lush balance, deep staging and a very quiet background with no edge or sibilance. Its treble is mild and smooth, so the sound is relaxed; listeners who like a lot of sparkle may want to hear it first. It suits Rega's RB880, RB3000 and RB Titanium arms. At 0.35 mV it needs an MC phono stage with high gain, set to 100 Ω.
The Apheta 3 sits between the Ania Pro and the reference Aphelion 2, and Rega fits it to the Planar 8 and Planar 10. Rega cartridges have bonded cantilevers and are not retipped; when a Apheta 3 wears out, Rega's exchange program supplies a renewed-to-factory-spec Apheta 3 for $1,745 instead of $2,245, like for like.
