The story

The Aphelion 2 is the most refined version of Rega's undamped moving-coil design. Its micro cross and coil, wound by hand from 0.018 mm wire, are among the smallest MC generators made. The assembly is built directly onto a solid boron rod cantilever, which is both very stiff and very light. A fine-line nude diamond is mounted through 90 degrees. There is no tie wire or foam damper; the cantilever pivots on a rhomboid pad, driven by Rega's most powerful miniature neodymium magnet. The body is machined from a single piece of black anodized aluminum to zero tolerance, so the pivot and magnet line up exactly with the mounting holes. Rega's three-point fixing sets overhang automatically on a Rega arm.

The Ear's Jason Kennedy found the Aphelion 2 bright and fast at first. After a few weeks it settled into a neutral, very high-resolution sound with wide bandwidth, strong bass and real depth. It resolves differences between pressings so clearly that some original LPs became more engaging than audiophile reissues. What Hi-Fi?, testing it on the Naia, praised its resolution and transparency and its large, deep soundstage. This is a cartridge for a top-tier Rega arm such as the RB3000 or RB Titanium. It needs a quiet MC phono stage with high gain set to 100 Ω.

The Aphelion 2 is Rega's reference cartridge and the top of the range, above the Apheta 3; Rega fits it to the Planar 10 and Naia. Rega cartridges have bonded cantilevers and are not retipped; when a Aphelion 2 wears out, Rega's exchange program supplies a renewed-to-factory-spec Aphelion 2 for $4,545 instead of $5,545, like for like.

Key technologies

  • Boron rod cantilever. The micro cross and coil are built directly onto a solid boron rod, very stiff and very light, with a fine-line nude diamond mounted through 90°.
  • Smallest Rega generator. A coil of 0.018 mm wire wound by hand, driven by Rega's most powerful miniature neodymium magnet; undamped.
  • Zero-tolerance aluminum body. Machined from one piece of black anodized aluminum so pivot and magnet line up exactly with the mounting holes.
  • Rega three-point fixing. Overhang sets itself on an RB3000 or RB Titanium arm.
  • Trade-in exchange. The cantilever is bonded, so Rega does not retip; a worn Aphelion 2 is exchanged for a renewed-to-spec Aphelion 2 at $4,545 instead of $5,545 through The Sound Organisation.
