The story

The P-4600 is the amplifier most Accuphase separates systems start with. Each channel uses six parallel push-pull power transistors in a three-stage Darlington configuration, driven in Class AB and arranged as an instrumentation amplifier with balanced inputs. Accuphase's MCS+ circuit runs the voltage amplification stage in parallel to lower the noise floor, current-feedback topology keeps the high-frequency phase stable, and balanced remote sensing feeds the speaker-terminal ground back to the amplifier for a guaranteed damping factor of 800. A toroidal transformer and 50,000 µF of filter capacitance sit behind it.

Output switching and protection use MOS-FET switches with no mechanical contacts, and a four-position gain selector (max, −3, −6 and −12 dB) matches the amplifier to any preamplifier. It supports bi-amping and a bridged mono mode for when a system grows, and the logarithmic power meters read down to −50 dB with switchable illumination. With a C-2300 in front of it, the P-4600 is a complete Accuphase separates system at about the price of the E-800S integrated.

Key technologies

  • Instrumentation amplifier with MCS+. Balanced input circuitry feeds a parallel voltage-amplification stage and six parallel push-pull transistors per channel in a three-stage Darlington arrangement.
  • Balanced remote sensing. Feeds the ground reference at the speaker terminals back to the amplifier, raising the effective damping factor at the speaker rather than at the chassis.
  • MOS-FET protection switches. Speaker protection and output switching use MOS-FETs with no mechanical contacts in the signal path.
  • Bi-amp and bridged modes. Four-position gain selector; supports bi-amping, and bridged mono operation for a later upgrade to two P-4600s.

Finishes

  • Champagne gold anodized aluminum front panel

Accuphase builds every component in a single finish, so there is nothing to choose. The champagne-gold front panel has been the house signature since 1972. The top plate is hairline-finished aluminum.

Where it sits in the range

The entry to Accuphase power amplifiers. The P-7500 doubles the power; the A-80 and A-300 are pure Class A.

  • Accuphase P-4600 (this model)
  • Accuphase P-7500: 300 W/ch Class AB flagship stereo power amplifier
  • Accuphase A-80: 65 W/ch pure Class A stereo power amplifier
  • Accuphase A-300: 125 W pure Class A monaural amplifier, sold per unit

Pair it with the C-2300 preamplifier. Two P-4600s in bridged mode make a monaural pair with about four times the output.
