The story

The C-57 succeeds the C-47 and is the first Accuphase phono stage to use ANCC in the moving-coil head amplifier: a low-noise secondary amplifier measures and cancels the residual noise and distortion of the main gain stage, where it matters most. The signal path is balanced from input to output, with a high-gain MC/MM head amplifier followed by a precision equalizer amplifier, and each channel is built as a separate monaural circuit on a symmetrical glass-cloth fluorocarbon board. Four 15,000 µF capacitors per channel and a dedicated low-noise supply for the ANCC circuit feed it.

One balanced MC input and three standard phono inputs let you run several arms or turntables. MC loading is selectable at 10, 30, 60, 100, 200 and 300 ohms and 1 kΩ, MM at 1 k, 47 k and 100 kΩ, gain is switchable between normal and high, and there is a 10 Hz subsonic filter and a polarity selector on the balanced output. With RIAA accuracy of ±0.3 dB and 98 dB signal-to-noise at 64 dB of MC gain, it is one of the quietest phono stages we have heard, and the right partner for a C-2300 or C-3900S.

Key technologies

  • ANCC in the head amplifier. Accuphase's Noise and distortion Cancelling Circuit is applied to the MC/MM head amplifier for the first time, with its own low-noise power supply.
  • Fully balanced signal path. Balanced amplification in both the head amplifier and the equalizer amplifier, from the balanced MC input to the balanced output.
  • Monaural construction. Left and right channels are separate circuits laid out symmetrically on a glass-cloth fluorocarbon resin board, each with four 15,000 µF supply capacitors.
  • Flexible loading and gain. Seven MC load settings including a new 60 Ω position, three MM settings, two gain ranges, a 10 Hz subsonic filter and output polarity selection.

Finishes

  • Champagne gold anodized aluminum front panel
  • Natural wood side panels with a natural wood-grain finish

Accuphase builds every component in a single finish, so there is nothing to choose. The champagne-gold front panel has been the house signature since 1972; this model adds natural wood-grain side panels. The top plate is hairline-finished aluminum.

Where it sits in the range

Accuphase's only stand-alone phono stage. The alternative is the AD-60 phono board, which fits the option slot of any current Accuphase integrated or the C-2300.

Choose the C-57 when you run a top-class moving-coil cartridge, more than one arm, or want balanced output into a C-2300 or C-3900S.
