Sonus faber · Reference

Sonus faber's flagship: a four-column system of two main towers, two passive subwoofers and an outboard analog crossover, reaching 16 Hz.

Price is for the complete system: two main columns, two subwoofers and the electronic crossover. Handcrafted in Italy.

Each Suprema main column is a 4.5-way sealed design in Sonus faber's lute shape, with eight front-firing drivers (four 8-inch dual-drive woofers, an 8-inch midwoofer, the 6.5-inch Camelia midrange that debuted here, a 38 mm tweeter and a 20 mm super tweeter) plus two rear-firing drivers for spaciousness. The midrange and tweeters sit in a computer-designed internal volume made from recycled cork. Two separate subwoofer columns, in the elliptical Stradivari shape, each carry two 15-inch forged carbon-fiber drivers, and a fully discrete analog crossover integrates them. IsoAcoustics ground coupling is built in.

Taking the deep bass out of the main columns lets each part do one job: the subwoofers can be placed for the room rather than the stereo image, and the crossover lets the installer fine-tune integration. The system needs separate amplification for the mains (100 to 700 W) and the passive subwoofers (500 to 2,000 W), and a large, dedicated room. Pearl Audio can help with room placement and amplifier matching.

Key technologies

  • Camelia midrange. A flower-shaped cellulose-pulp cone, unsuspended at its edge to avoid the resonances of a round cone.
  • Cork internal volume. An organic, computer-simulated chamber in recycled cork, with no regular interior walls.
  • Dual-drive woofers. A dual magnetic system for control and dynamics, with an organic basket derived from Stradivari.
  • Passive subwoofer columns. Two 15 in forged carbon-fiber drivers each, reaching 16 Hz, placed independently of the mains.
  • Analog active crossover. Dual-mono, fully balanced, fully discrete electronic crossover for subwoofer integration.
  • Natural materials. Carbon fiber, wood and CNC-machined aluminum, with Poltrona Frau leather on the front.

Finishes

  • Red
  • Graphite
  • Wenge
  • Walnut
  • Red Violin

High-gloss wood with carbon fiber, Italian leather and solid aluminum. Sonus faber also offers custom wood, leather and internal-cable options.
