The .7 is a two-way planar-magnetic loudspeaker. Instead of cones in a cabinet, a thin Mylar diaphragm carrying a bonded aluminum-foil voice coil is driven across its whole surface by rows of magnets. Magnepan calls this a quasi-ribbon, and the .7 uses it for both the bass/midrange and the tweeter sections of a single 54-inch panel. Because the panel is open at the back, it radiates as a dipole, equally to the front and rear, with nothing behind the diaphragm to color the sound.
Reviewers single out the .7's openness, tonal richness and surprising energy for its size; Stereophile's Herb Reichert found it lively with rock as well as refined with acoustic music, provided the amplifier could deliver current. Like all Maggies it is a 4 Ω load with 86 dB sensitivity, so plan on a powerful, high-current amplifier. Start with the panels about 3 feet from the wall behind them, toed in toward the listening seat, and move them in 6 to 12 inch steps to tune the bass.
The stile is the frame trim. Fabric: Black, Grey, Off White or Cherry White. The .7x adds Red Aluminum and Black Wood stiles.
