The story

The BX100 is the loudspeaker Burmester introduced in 2024 to sit between the B-Series and the BC150. It is a four-way bass reflex design with crossover points at 130 Hz, 240 Hz and 2.2 kHz. The Air Motion Transformer stands free in its own block on top of the cabinet, which gives it wide dispersion and a large listening area and makes it the visual center of the design. Below it a 17 cm midrange and a 17 cm midbass driver, both with ultra-light polypropylene and carbon-fiber cones, cover the voice range, and two 26 cm sandwich-cone woofers of glass fiber and polyester fabric fire from the sides for deep, controlled bass with large diaphragm area.

The cabinet is modular and heavily reinforced, with a new damping architecture to keep the enclosure quiet, and its gently curved, almost organic shape is meant to fit living spaces rather than dominate them. Gold-plated copper bridges on the terminal panel let the owner fine-tune the balance to the room and placement, and the internal wiring is laid out for low-loss transmission. Burmester rates the BX100 at 89 dB sensitivity, 3 Ω nominal impedance, 37 Hz to 24 kHz within 3 dB and 350 W nominal load capacity. Each speaker weighs 135 kg on its feet, or 141 kg on the optional spikes.

Alan Sircom reviewed the BX100 for hi-fi+ and judged it a significant step for Burmester as a loudspeaker maker, praising its clarity, coherence and the integration of the side-firing bass, while noting that its size, 3 Ω impedance and placement deserve care. Burmester's own 218 or 259 are the natural amplifiers; a 232 with the DAC module can drive it in a smaller system, and we can set it up either way in our Portland showroom.

What makes the BX100 unusual is the configuration. The cabinet comes in five standard finishes, white or black in matt or gloss, or middle-gray matt, with three metallic special paints at a surcharge; the waist, side panels and front cover are chosen separately from ten colors, so the speaker can be made to blend in or to contrast. The side panels and other design elements are replaceable, so a BX100 can be refinished later.

Key technologies

  • Free-standing AMT. The Air Motion Transformer sits in its own block on top of the cabinet for wide dispersion and an extended sweet spot.
  • Four-way design. Crossover points at 130 Hz, 240 Hz and 2.2 kHz divide the work between five drivers.
  • Polypropylene-carbon cones. Ultra-light 17 cm midrange and midbass diaphragms with high internal damping for fast, precise impulse response.
  • Side-firing 26 cm woofers. Two sandwich-cone bass drivers give large diaphragm area for deep, rhythmic bass with stable control at high levels.
  • Modular, damped cabinet. A reinforced modular enclosure with a new damping architecture reduces unwanted vibration.
  • Adjustable tuning. Gold-plated copper bridges allow fine-tuning to room acoustics, placement and taste.
