Burmester · B-Series

The B28 is a three-way B-Series floorstander with every driver on the front: an Air Motion Transformer, a 17 cm fiberglass midrange and two 17 cm woofers, each in its own sealed chamber inside a 45-inch cabinet.

Price is for a pair in a standard finish. Custom special paint for the B-Series adds $6,000 per pair.

The story

The B28 shares the B38's three-way principle but arranges all four drivers on the front baffle, which makes it the easier of the two to place and the one with the more coherent radiation pattern. Each driver works in its own enclosure chamber so none interacts with another, and the crossover sits in a separate chamber to keep microphonic effects out of the signal. Systematically placed stiffening elements stabilize the enclosure walls and reduce cabinet vibration, and two flow-optimized bass reflex tubes with smooth, rigid surfaces let the two 17 cm woofers reach 39 Hz with little loss.

The treble comes from an Air Motion Transformer with a flexible but stable foil diaphragm and good internal damping; its narrow width, like the B38's, gives low horizontal dispersion with a wide sweet spot. The midrange is a 17 cm driver with a stiff glass-fiber cone. Internal wiring is Burmester cable with fine strands and large cross-sections. Burmester rates the B28 at 87 dB sensitivity, 4 Ω impedance, 39 Hz to 31 kHz within 3 dB and 180 W power handling, and at 82 lb per speaker it is a manageable size for a normal living room.

Holger Biermann of LowBeats called the B28 the best all-round loudspeaker he knew below 20,000 euros, praising its build and its undemanding electrical load, and gave it the magazine's top rating. The 232 or 032 integrated amplifiers and the 036 or 956 MK2 power amplifiers are its natural partners, and the step up to the B38 is worth hearing for a larger room. We can set them up side by side in our Portland showroom.

The B28 is finished in white, middle-grey, black or American walnut, all matt, with a screwless silver or black front. Custom colors are available at a surcharge through Burmester's BESPOKE program.

Key technologies

  • All front-firing. Tweeter, midrange and both woofers face forward for coherent radiation and easy room integration.
  • Separate driver chambers. Each driver has its own enclosure chamber; the crossover is housed separately to prevent microphonic effects.
  • Air Motion Transformer. A narrow AMT with a damped foil diaphragm for clear, fast treble and a wide sweet spot.
  • Flow-optimized reflex ports. Two stiff, smooth-walled bass reflex tubes for low-loss deep bass.
  • Stiffened cabinet. Systematically placed bracing reduces wall vibration and cabinet resonance.
  • Burmester internal wiring. Fine-stranded, large cross-section cable keeps transmission losses negligible.

Finishes

  • White matt lacquer; silver or black front
  • Middle-Grey matt lacquer; silver or black front
  • Black matt lacquer; silver or black front
  • American Walnut matt veneer; silver or black front

All four standard finishes are the same price. Custom special paint adds $6,000 per pair.
