The story
The B18 is a 2½-way bass reflex loudspeaker with all drivers on the front. The tweeter is a ring radiator with a titanium membrane developed exclusively for Burmester, and the two 17 cm glass-fiber paper-cone drivers are an evolution of a proven unit: one works as a mid-woofer in its own closed chamber for a clean midrange, and the other adds bass below it. The crossover is housed in a separate cabinet chamber. The massive MDF front and a cabinet optimized with finite-element analysis keep resonance low and bass precise.
The base is built on a sandwich principle from a high-molecular thermoplastic and other materials with high internal damping, which decouples the speaker from the floor. A bass switch on the rear and an optional foam cylinder for the port adapt the low end to the room and to taste. Burmester rates the B18 at 88 dB sensitivity, 4 Ω impedance, 42 Hz to 30 kHz within 3 dB and 120 W power handling, so a 101 integrated amplifier drives it comfortably.
Alan Sircom reviewed the B18 for hi-fi+ and called it easy to live with and highly detailed, delivering far more than its price suggests, worth considering even by people who do not own Burmester electronics. In 2022 the B18 was brought into line with the B28 and B38, gaining the screwless front and the common range of cabinet and front finishes; the review covers the earlier version. The B18 and 101 are the smallest complete Burmester system we offer, and we can set them up for you in our Portland showroom.
The B18 is finished in white, middle-grey, black or American walnut, all matt, with a silver or black anodized front. Custom colors are available at a surcharge through Burmester's BESPOKE program.
All four standard finishes are the same price. Custom special paint adds $6,000 per pair.
