The story

The E-800S is the successor to the E-800 that Accuphase built for its fiftieth anniversary, and it is the company's statement of what an integrated amplifier can be. Six-fold parallel push-pull power MOS-FETs per channel run in pure Class A and are arranged as an instrumentation amplifier; a toroidal transformer and two 63,000 µF capacitors let the output double with every halving of impedance, to 300 watts into 1 ohm on music signals. The damping factor is 1,000, with balanced remote sensing holding it at the speaker terminals.

The preamplifier section is the balanced AAVA volume control with ANCC noise cancelling, built around a volume sensor machined from a single block of aluminum. Five line inputs, three balanced inputs, a recorder loop, balanced and line pre-outs and main-ins, a discrete headphone amplifier and two option slots for the DAC-60 digital or AD-60 phono boards mean it can anchor a complete system. The Absolute Sound named it an Editors' Choice. It is for the listener who wants one chassis to be the last amplifier they buy.

Key technologies

  • Pure Class A MOS-FET output stage. Six-fold parallel push-pull power MOS-FETs per channel in Class A, doubling output to 100, 200 and 300 W into 4, 2 and 1 Ω.
  • Balanced AAVA volume control. Accuphase's Accurate Analog Variable Amplifier replaces the volume potentiometer with weighted current-to-voltage converters switched in combination, here in a fully balanced configuration, so there is no resistive element in the signal path and no change in impedance or frequency response as you turn the knob.
  • ANCC noise cancelling. The Accuphase Noise and distortion Cancelling Circuit uses a low-noise secondary amplifier to measure and cancel the residual noise and distortion of the main amplifier.
  • Instrumentation amplifier with balanced remote sensing. Fully balanced power stage with current-feedback topology; the ground reference is sensed at the speaker terminals for a damping factor of 1,000.

Finishes

  • Champagne gold anodized aluminum front panel

Accuphase builds every component in a single finish, so there is nothing to choose. The champagne-gold front panel has been the house signature since 1972.

Where it sits in the range

The flagship of the integrated range. The E-700 is the smaller pure Class A design; the E-6000 is the Class AB alternative with five times the 8-ohm power.

Beyond the E-800S, Accuphase moves to separates: the C-3900S preamplifier with the A-80 or a pair of A-300 monaural amplifiers.
