The story

The E-4000 brings separates technology into one chassis. Its volume control is Accuphase's balanced AAVA, with the ANCC circuit cancelling the residual noise and distortion of the volume amplifier, so the quietest passages keep their detail. The power stage is an instrumentation amplifier with four-fold parallel push-pull transistors in Class AB, current-feedback topology and balanced remote sensing, behind a toroidal transformer and two 40,000 µF/80 V filter capacitors. A damping factor of 800 keeps bass drivers under control.

Five line inputs, two balanced inputs, a recorder loop, balanced and line pre-outs and main-ins, a dedicated headphone amplifier and tone and loudness controls make it a complete system hub, and two option slots accept the DAC-60 digital board or the AD-60 phono board. With 180 watts into 8 ohms and 260 into 4, the E-4000 is the Accuphase integrated we recommend most often for medium and large rooms and full-range speakers.

Key technologies

  • Balanced AAVA volume control. Accuphase's Accurate Analog Variable Amplifier replaces the volume potentiometer with weighted current-to-voltage converters switched in combination, here in a fully balanced configuration, so there is no resistive element in the signal path and no change in impedance or frequency response as you turn the knob.
  • ANCC noise cancelling. The Accuphase Noise and distortion Cancelling Circuit uses a low-noise secondary amplifier to measure and cancel the residual noise and distortion of the main amplifier.
  • Instrumentation-amplifier power stage. Balanced from input to speaker terminals, with current-feedback amplification for stable high-frequency phase behaviour.
  • Two option slots. Accept Accuphase's DAC-60 digital input board (USB, coaxial, optical) and AD-60 MM/MC phono board, or a LINE-10 line board, so the amplifier grows with your system.

Finishes

  • Champagne gold anodized aluminum front panel

Accuphase builds every component in a single finish, so there is nothing to choose. The champagne-gold front panel has been the house signature since 1972.

Where it sits in the range

The high-power Class AB integrated in the middle of the range. The E-6000 adds more power; the E-700 and E-800S trade watts for pure Class A.

Add the DAC-60 board for digital inputs or the AD-60 board for phono. For a dedicated phono stage, see the C-57.
