Accuphase · E Series

The E-700 is a pure Class A integrated amplifier: 35 watts into 8 ohms that doubles to 70, 140 and 160 watts as impedance falls, with the balanced AAVA volume control and ANCC noise cancelling of the flagship E-800 series.

Price is for one unit.

The story

Class A means the output transistors conduct the full signal at all times, with no crossover between halves of the waveform, and the price is heat and weight: the E-700 idles at 178 watts and weighs 55 pounds to deliver 35. What you get is a sound that reviewers consistently describe as liquid and unforced. The output stage is four-fold parallel push-pull power MOS-FETs arranged as an instrumentation amplifier, and because the supply is a massive toroidal transformer with two 56,000 µF capacitors, output doubles into 4 ohms and doubles again into 2, so the E-700 drives difficult speakers far better than its 8-ohm rating suggests.

The preamplifier section is the same balanced AAVA and ANCC design as the E-800S, with a volume sensor machined from a single aluminum block. Five line inputs, two balanced inputs, a recorder loop, balanced and line pre-outs and main-ins, a headphone jack and two option slots for the DAC-60 digital or AD-60 phono boards complete the picture. For efficient speakers in a quiet room, this is one of the most musically satisfying amplifiers we sell.

Key technologies

  • Pure Class A MOS-FET output stage. Four-fold parallel push-pull power MOS-FETs biased in Class A, with output that doubles into 4 and 2 ohms (160 W into 1 Ω on music signals).
  • Balanced AAVA volume control. Accuphase's Accurate Analog Variable Amplifier replaces the volume potentiometer with weighted current-to-voltage converters switched in combination, here in a fully balanced configuration, so there is no resistive element in the signal path and no change in impedance or frequency response as you turn the knob.
  • ANCC noise cancelling. The Accuphase Noise and distortion Cancelling Circuit uses a low-noise secondary amplifier to measure and cancel the residual noise and distortion of the main amplifier.
  • Two option slots. Accept Accuphase's DAC-60 digital input board (USB, coaxial, optical) and AD-60 MM/MC phono board, or a LINE-10 line board, so the amplifier grows with your system.

Finishes

  • Champagne gold anodized aluminum front panel

Accuphase builds every component in a single finish, so there is nothing to choose. The champagne-gold front panel has been the house signature since 1972.

Where it sits in the range

The more affordable of the two pure Class A integrateds. The E-800S adds output, a third balanced input and a larger supply; the E-4000 and E-6000 are the Class AB alternatives with far more power.

Add the DAC-60 board for digital inputs or the AD-60 board for phono. For a dedicated phono stage, see the C-57.
