C2800 Preamplifier

on-demo
in-stock

The C2800 combines a four-tube analog architecture with the source capacity and system flexibility expected of a modern McIntosh control component.

  • Vacuum-tube signal path — three 12AX7A tubes and one 12AT7 tube.
  • Sixteen inputs — nine analog and seven digital connections.
  • System flexibility — configurable phono stages, filtered outputs, subwoofer support, and a Processor Loop.

A Vacuum-Tube Preamplifier Built as a Complete System Center

The McIntosh C2800 combines a four-tube analog architecture with the broad source and system flexibility expected of a modern McIntosh control component. Three 12AX7A tubes and one 12AT7 tube are visible beneath the glass top panel, while precision volume control and fully regulated power supplies support quiet, consistent operation.

Its sixteen inputs comprise nine analog and seven digital connections. Three balanced and four unbalanced line inputs are joined by two phono inputs, each independently configurable for moving-coil or moving-magnet cartridges. The included DA2 Digital Audio Module adds two coaxial, two optical, USB, MCT, and HDMI ARC inputs, and is designed so the module can be replaced if McIntosh develops a future digital module.

Flexible Outputs for a System That Can Evolve

Three stereo sets of variable balanced and unbalanced outputs can operate simultaneously. The Main output and Output 1 include adjustable high-pass and low-pass filtering for bi-amplified systems, while Output 2 can be configured for mono or stereo subwoofer use or for an additional listening area. A Processor Loop provides a convenient connection point for an equalizer, room-correction component, or compatible recording equipment.

Planning and Installation

The C2800 measures 17 1/2 inches wide, 7 5/8 inches high, and 16 1/2 inches deep, and weighs 28 pounds. Pearl Audio can help configure its phono inputs around your cartridge, plan amplifier and subwoofer connections, integrate television audio through HDMI ARC, and arrange a private in-store audition.

A perspective from Pearl Audio

John’s Take

I have been selling McIntosh tube preamplifiers since the C2200 era, and I owned a C2200 myself. What appeals to me about the C2800 is that the tubes are only the beginning of the story. This is also an unusually capable system controller: two configurable phono inputs, a serious digital section, flexible outputs, and even the return of the Processor Loop. It can anchor a very simple system, but it has enough range to remain useful when the system becomes considerably more ambitious. That is a good preamplifier’s real job—it should make the system easier to enjoy today without putting a ceiling on what you may want to do tomorrow.
