The story
Many modern amplifiers, powered speakers and all-in-one systems have no phono input. The Planar 1 Plus solves that without a separate box. Rega built a moving-magnet phono stage into the plinth, derived from its What Hi-Fi? award-winning Fono Mini, so the turntable's output is line level and connects with the supplied RCA lead. The deck is otherwise a Planar 1: RB110 arm, Carbon cartridge fitted, 24 V motor and 23 mm phenolic platter.
The RB110 is hand assembled with Rega's patented low-friction bearings and a pre-set bias assembly, with a stiffer headshell. The 24 V synchronous motor has a new control PCB and aluminum pulley, and the brass main bearing housing is Rega's patent-pending design. The feet are Rega's custom isolating design.
What Hi-Fi? called it the perfect marriage of convenience and sound quality. It suits an io or Brio owner who wants to free up the amplifier's phono input, and it is the simplest route into vinyl for a system that was never designed for it. If you later add a better external phono stage, the built-in one cannot be bypassed, so buyers planning serious upgrades should start with the Planar 1 or Planar 2.
