The story
The Ovation borrows its drive from the Innovation series. A high-torque 24 V DC motor made exclusively for Clearaudio is decoupled within the chassis and turns a flat belt hidden under the platter. Optical Speed Control reads the sub-platter in real time with an infrared sensor and holds wow and flutter to ±0.03%. The 40 mm POM platter has a CNC-milled surface and a weighted rim, and sits on an aluminum sub-platter over Clearaudio's patented CMB bearing, a cut and polished ceramic shaft in a sintered bronze bushing with magnetic support.
The chassis is bulletproof wood (Panzerholz) in a sandwich between two aluminum plates, with the remaining cavities filled with around 100,000 tiny metal balls to suppress resonance. At nearly 30 lb in a 420 × 350 mm footprint it is dense rather than large. Stereophile found it resolving and musical, with warm body and a cohesive tone, and clearly more detailed than Clearaudio's Concept. What Hi-Fi? called it a terrific all-rounder with drive, punch and controlled bass.
This listing is the turntable without a tonearm. Clearaudio's Tracer and Universal 9-inch both fit, and it plays 78s as well as 33⅓ and 45. Musical Surroundings includes the Professional Power 24V linear supply. Choose a natural wood or black lacquer chassis with black or silver aluminum.
Black lacquer versions are priced above the natural wood versions.
