The story
For the Nd9, Rega took the cantilever and stylus from its reference Aphelion 2 moving coil and paired them with the Nd range's generator. A solid boron rod cantilever, exceptionally stiff and light, carries a fine-line nude diamond. Behind it sit an N55 neodymium magnet and miniaturized parallel coils with symmetrical geometry for accurate channel balance. The body is injection molded from glass-filled PPS with Rega's three-point fixing. Rega specifies the Nd9 for Rega tonearms only. It has an amber window and is handmade. Instead of a plug-in replacement stylus, Rega offers a rebuild scheme through your dealer.
The Ear tested the Nd9 with two reviewers. Ed Selley found it kept the drive and engagement of his Planar 10 system, with more natural tone than the Nd7 and detail that shows texture without turning analytical. Bass was controlled and articulate. Jason Kennedy heard very little coloration and fine separation of instruments in dense mixes. Both concluded it is a real alternative to a moving coil. It is easy to set up on a Rega arm and is offered factory-fitted on the Planar 8. With 5–6 mV of output, it runs from any good MM phono stage.
The Nd9 is the top of Rega's moving magnets, above the Nd7; the Ania is the first Rega moving coil. Rega cartridges have bonded cantilevers and are not retipped; when a Nd9 wears out, Rega's exchange program supplies a renewed-to-factory-spec Nd9 for $795 instead of $1,045, like for like.
