Rega · Nd Series
The first step in Rega's neodymium-powered Nd range: an affordable moving magnet with open, extended treble and real timing.
Authorized Rega dealer · Delivery and installation by Pearl Audio · Trade-ins welcome
The story
Rega developed the Nd range over about ten years around an ultra-high-powered neodymium magnet and a miniaturized generator. The Nd3 uses miniaturized parallel coils and a bonded elliptical stylus on an aluminum cantilever. The body is injection molded from glass-filled PPS, a light and very rigid polymer, and uses Rega's three-point fixing, so overhang sets itself on a Rega arm. Each one is handmade. You can spot the Nd3 by its red window. Rather than a plug-in replacement stylus, Rega offers a rebuild scheme: a worn Nd cartridge goes back through your dealer and comes back with a new cantilever, stylus and pivot.
The Ear's Jason Kennedy found the Nd3 a clear step up from the Carbon. Its treble is open and extended, and it brings good timing, vocal detail, depth and bass for the money. As you would expect, Rega's moving coils are more revealing and precise, but the Nd3 makes it easy to just enjoy the music. With 5–6 mV of output, it works with any MM phono stage. It is offered factory-fitted on the Planar 2 and Planar 3 and is a natural upgrade for owners of either.
The Nd3 is the first step above the Carbon and below the Nd5. Rega cartridges have bonded cantilevers and are not retipped; when a Nd3 wears out, Rega's exchange program supplies a renewed-to-factory-spec Nd3 for $305 instead of $345, like for like.
