The story

Accuphase developed the A-80 as a stereo amplifier version of the A-300, and it inherits the anniversary model's architecture. Ten parallel push-pull power MOS-FETs per channel run in pure Class A, arranged as an instrumentation amplifier with balanced inputs, behind a toroidal transformer and 120,000 µF of filter capacitance; output doubles with each halving of impedance, to 520 watts into 1 ohm on music signals, and in bridged mono it delivers 260 watts into 8 ohms. MCS+ parallel voltage amplification, current feedback and balanced remote sensing give a damping factor above 1,000.

Class A biasing means the A-80 idles at 211 watts and runs warm, and it rewards that with the effortless, grain-free sound that has made Accuphase's A series the choice of listeners who value texture over sheer level. MOS-FET switches handle protection without contacts in the signal path, and a four-position gain selector matches any preamplifier. With a C-3900S in front of it and speakers of moderate sensitivity, it is one of the finest stereo amplifiers we offer.

Key technologies

  • Pure Class A MOS-FET output stage. Ten parallel push-pull power MOS-FETs per channel in Class A: 65 W into 8 Ω, 130 W into 4 Ω, 260 W into 2 Ω, 520 W into 1 Ω (music signals).
  • Instrumentation amplifier with MCS+. Balanced inputs feed a two-parallel voltage-amplification stage and current-feedback topology for a 123 dB signal-to-noise ratio.
  • Balanced remote sensing. Feeds the ground reference at the speaker terminals back to the amplifier, raising the effective damping factor at the speaker rather than at the chassis.
  • Bridged and bi-amp modes. 260 W into 8 Ω, 520 W into 4 Ω or 1,040 W into 2 Ω bridged; four-position gain selector.

Finishes

  • Champagne gold anodized aluminum front panel

Accuphase builds every component in a single finish, so there is nothing to choose. The champagne-gold front panel has been the house signature since 1972. The top plate is hairline-finished aluminum.

Where it sits in the range

The stereo pure Class A amplifier. The A-300 is its monaural big brother; the P-4600 and P-7500 are the Class AB designs with more power per dollar.

Pair it with the C-3900S or C-2300. A second A-80 in bridged mode is the path to monaural Class A.
