Bowers & Wilkins · 800 Series Diamond D5

The flagship of the 800 Series: the most bass, the most scale and the most effortless dynamics Bowers & Wilkins builds, now refined with Signature-grade parts throughout.

The 801 D5 keeps the architecture that has defined B&W's reference speaker for decades: a Diamond Dome tweeter in its own solid aluminum housing on top, a 6-inch Continuum Cone midrange floating in the Turbine Head, and a pair of 10-inch Aerofoil bass drivers in a heavily braced cabinet. What changes for D5 is the detail. The motor systems are derived from the 801 D4 Signature, rear Space Frame rails and a thicker internal Matrix stiffen the cabinet, and a new tuned plinth damps what's left.

In a large room the 801 D5 does something few speakers manage: it plays genuinely low and genuinely loud without the midrange losing its composure. With a −6 dB point of 13 Hz, it rarely needs help from a subwoofer for music. It is an easy load to drive in principle, with 90 dB sensitivity, but its 3.0 Ω minimum impedance rewards a powerful, high-current amplifier. It is built for large rooms and for listeners who want orchestral scale at realistic levels.

What's new in D5

  • Signature-derived motors. Midrange and bass motor systems use components developed for the D4 Signature, for lower distortion.
  • Space Frame bracing. New aluminum rails on the back of the cabinet stiffen the enclosure.
  • Stronger Matrix. Thicker aluminum bracing around each drive-unit opening stiffens the front panel.
  • Tuned plinth. A new plinth with tuned-mass damping and outriggers, matched to each model.
  • New tweeter grille. A more acoustically transparent mesh, with a longer tube-loading system behind the tweeter.
  • Signature-grade crossover. Upgraded components, a better wiring harness, and crossovers mounted on an aluminum plate.

Finishes

  • Stealth Black with black grille
  • Warm White with grey grille
  • Light Walnut with grey grille
  • Dark Walnut with black grille

The top plate is trimmed in Leather by Connolly: black on Stealth Black and Dark Walnut, light grey on Warm White and Light Walnut.
