The story

Nordost calls the tonearm lead one of the most critical cables in an analog system, because it carries the smallest signal in the chain. The Heimdall 2 Tonearm Cable + uses four 28 AWG conductors of silver-plated 99.99999% oxygen-free copper, solid core, as two individually shielded twisted pairs in Micro Mono-Filament construction, with mechanically tuned lay and lengths. Capacitance is a low 11.46 pF/ft and shield coverage 97%.

The plus in the name is the grounding. A separately shielded, silver-plated 24 AWG bond wire runs alongside the channels, and two detachable ground whips let you connect the cable's ground to whichever point in the system is quietest, which Nordost says reduces noise regardless of the components involved. Jay Garrett of StereoNET, reviewing it in March 2022, found its gains over the Blue Heaven model and its tunable grounding made it a must-audition for vinyl upgraders.

The cable comes with a straight or 90° MoonGlo 5-pin DIN or an RCA pair at the tonearm end, and RCA or XLR at the phono stage; the 90° DIN carries a small surcharge and needs a pin orientation. Lengths run from 1.25 m to 4.25 m in the selector. It is the right phono cable for a Rega, Clearaudio or Technics turntable feeding a MOON or McIntosh phono stage.

Key technologies

  • Micro Mono-Filament. An FEP thread wound around each conductor creates a virtual air dielectric inside the extruded FEP tube.
  • Individually shielded twisted pairs. Two pairs, each shielded, for 97% overall coverage and low crosstalk.
  • Low capacitance. 11.46 pF/ft (37.5 pF/m) suits moving-magnet and moving-coil cartridges alike.
  • Bond wire and ground whips. A separately shielded 24 AWG silver-plated bond wire plus two detachable whips with gold-plated 5 mm spades.
  • MoonGlo DIN. Low-mass straight or 90° 5-pin DIN; RCA or XLR also available.
