Maxima Amator uses just two drivers, a 28 mm DAD soft-dome tweeter with a neodymium motor and a 7-inch midwoofer, joined by Sonus faber's IFF (Interactive Fusion Filtering) crossover at 2,100 Hz. The solid walnut cabinet is built as three chambers: an acoustic volume lined with recycled carbon fiber and silica fiber, a weighted chamber that lowers the center of gravity, and a separate chamber that isolates the crossover from driver vibration. A Port Saint Laurent marble top finishes it.
With no crossover in the midrange, voices and acoustic instruments sound direct and of a piece. Reviewers were struck by how much bass, scale and soundstage it delivers for its size; for content below about 30 Hz, add a subwoofer. Sonus faber recommends 25 to 125 W, so it suits high-quality amplifiers of moderate power. It is at home in small and medium rooms.
