The story

ThunderBird is where AudioQuest's Mythical Creatures range begins, and the XLR version is a three-cable construction: separate runs for hot, cold and ground inside one jacket. The conductors are solid Perfect-Surface Copper+, AudioQuest's highest grade of copper, direction-controlled and insulated in FEP Air-Tubes so the positive conductors barely touch their dielectric. ZERO-Tech removes the cable's characteristic impedance by eliminating the electrostatic field between the signal conductors.

Noise is handled at Level 6, AudioQuest's second-highest tier: a carbon and graphene resistive mesh network, direction-controlled conductors and 6% silver-plated drain wires terminating in grounded copper-plated barrels. The plugs are hanging-silver over extreme-purity Red Copper. Because the XLR build has two signal conductors to bias, it ships with a dual 72 V Dielectric-Bias System pack.

ThunderBird is a balanced-system cable for line-level sources: a DAC or streamer into a preamplifier, or preamplifier to power amplifier. AudioQuest states that its ZERO-Tech interconnects are not suitable for use from a turntable. Lengths from 0.5 m to 6 m are standard, with custom lengths through Pearl Audio.

Key technologies

  • Solid Perfect-Surface Copper+. Solid, direction-controlled conductors prevent electrical and magnetic strand interaction.
  • ZERO-Tech. The cable has no characteristic impedance; the electrostatic field between high and low conductors is eliminated.
  • FEP Air-Tube insulation. Positive conductors have almost no contact with their insulation; negative conductors use intentionally lossy insulation.
  • Level 6 Noise-Dissipation. Carbon and graphene resistive mesh network, direction-controlled conductors and 6% silver-plated drain wires.
  • Dual 72 V DBS. Two Dielectric-Bias packs keep the insulation of both signal conductors saturated and polarized.
