The story

Solidsteel designed the VL series for people whose system and record collection share the same wall. Each shelf is a 50 by 16.1-inch slab of laminated MDF carried on six damped, anodized aluminium pillars and rated to 264 pounds, so a level filled edge to edge with records does not sag. The 12.8-inch spacing takes 12-inch sleeves standing up, about 120 per level.

The top of the VL-3 sits at 28 inches, a comfortable turntable height, with an 18.9-inch inner bay on either side of the centre pillars for a phono stage, integrated amplifier or streamer. Stainless hardware and floor protectors are included; extra shelf kits with 8.9- or 12.9-inch poles add a level for more records or more gear.

Key technologies

  • Damped aluminium pillars. Each threaded pillar is an anodized aluminium tube filled with damping material, so the structure stores far less energy than a hollow welded steel frame and releases what it does store quickly.
  • Record-sized spacing. 12.8-inch openings hold LPs upright, about 120 per level, with the shelf rated to carry a full load.
  • Six-pillar wide frame. Fifty inches of shelf split into two bays, each wide enough for a full-size component.
  • Stainless hardware, zinc-treated terminals. All fasteners are stainless steel and the iron pillar terminals are AVP zinc treated to rule out rust.
