Hana Umami Red

The Hana Umami Red moving coil cartridge represents a confluence of artisanal Japanese craftsmanship and modern audio engineering, conceived by designer Okada-san and built by Excel Sound. Its generator unites a Microline stylus, boron cantilever, and high-purity copper coils with a samarium cobalt magnet and cryogenically treated pure iron magnetic circuitry, producing an output of 0.4 mV. The body pairs precision-machined Duralumin with an ebony wood element finished in gloss Urushi lacquer, a combination chosen to control resonance and provide a rigid, low-noise foundation for the motor.

Designed for listeners who value tonal sophistication and textural nuance, the Umami Red tracks at 2 grams and presents a 6 Ω internal impedance, working comfortably into phono stages with a load above 60 Ω. Its 30 dB channel separation and extended 10–50,000 Hz frequency response contribute to a spacious, well-focused stereo image, while the Microline stylus retrieves fine detail from the groove with a light touch. The cartridge weighs 10.5 grams, making it compatible with a broad range of medium-mass tonearms, and is backed by a two-year warranty.
